COLONIALS EXTREMELY RARE NE 6P

LOT 59 (1652) New England 6 Pence Noe 2-B R7+, W-20 URS-4, Breen-10, VF20. Glossy medium steel gray with smooth but lightly abraded surfaces. Quality comparable to the Ford example of the variety (Stack’s 10/18/2005:5), but the Ford coin had a couple significant digs. The two stamps are clear and evenly impressed, and alone they would surely justify a higher grade. There appears to be some undertype, especially on the obverse (NE side). Possibly struck over a Spanish silver piece but that is just a guess. Only two sixpence varieties are known: the Noe 1-A with thick letters and this Noe 2-B with delicate letters. According to Breen and Ford the Noe 2-B variety may have been a contemporary counterfeit, not an official “mint” issue. We may never know. Only six examples are traced (one of which is impounded in the National Numismatic Collection). An extremely rare prize for the collector of early American colonial coins. We believe this is a circulating counterfeit and not certifiable at any service. Weight 44.75 grains.

Ex Samuel Benton Emory Collection (great-great grandfather of the present consignor; the bulk of his collection was sold by Heritage Auctions in 2010). Letters supplied by the consignor accompany this lot.

 SPECTACULAR LATE DIE STATE

LOT 60 (1652-74) St. Patrick Farthing, Martin 1a.1-Ca.4, Griffee 1-0/1b, Breen-208, R7 PCGS graded F15. Type with “Nothing Below King.” Glossy light brown blending to olive brown in protected areas. Smooth and very nice for the grade. The only defect is a small spot of shallow greenish verdigris following the A in FLOREAT. The brass splasher is large but it is offset to the upper left just touching the crown, and the brass is toned a darker shade of olive. The obverse is unevenly struck because the reverse has a large cud break at the top. An impressive die state. Less than 10 are known of this die variety. This is the plate coin for the late state of the reverse in the 2018 Martin reference for St. Patrick coinage. Weight 89.2 grains. The attribution and Martin Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 915280.15/47375034

The brass splasher is quite large; it covers the crown and much of the area below and is toned light brassy tan. Smooth except for some microscopic planchet roughness hidden in the center of the obverse (king side). A straight-edge planchet clip touches the top of the X in REX (as struck). EDS with an uncracked reverse. Plated in the 2018 Martin reference to illustrate both sides. Weight 91.2 grains. LOT 62 (1652-74) St. Patrick Farthing, Martin 1c.21-Ba.21, Griffee 1-4/0l(L), Breen-208, R7 PCGS graded XF40. Very attractive glossy light brown on the devices with medium reddish brown in the fields and protected areas. The brass splasher covers most of the crown and its color is light olive. Smooth except for a bit of extremely fine granularity around the upper part of the crown. A shallow planchet flaw left a depression at the R in REX and another over the left top of the crown, as struck. Nicely centered with great eye appeal. Weight 94.6 grains. Glossy light olive brown with some reddish brown toning in protected areas. The splasher is light golden brown and it covers more than half of the crown. Mostly smooth but there are traces of microscopic roughness in protected areas. Just a few contact marks including a short scratch on the harp strings and hairline scratches to the right of St. Patrick. All the marks are old and blended into the toning. Later die state with swelling on both sides, strongest just right of the X in REX. Struck slightly off center to the left. A die combination not found in the Griffee collection, but the obverse was used in an earlier die state on his G1 4/2i. Weight 79.8 grains. MARTIN PLATE COIN

LOT 64 (1652-74) St. Patrick Farthing, Martin 3g.2-Db.2, Griffee 31-7/4a, Breen-212, R7 PCGS graded XF40. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with a subtle overtone of reddish brown. A glass reveals minor roughness on both sides, mostly in the centers which suggests the roughness was present before striking. The splasher is small and positioned mostly over the crown. No verdigris or notable contact marks. The obverse is nicely centered on the planchet but the reverse is off a bit to K-10.5. The obverse is plated in the 2018 Martin reference on the series to illustrate that die. Weight 83.0 grains. Type with “Sea Beasts Below King, Stars in Legend.” Glossy medium brown with olive brown in protected areas. The splasher is bright golden tan and is offset to the right covering only a third of the crown. The surfaces are smooth but there are many tiny lumps from die rust. Late die state with a strong die crack from the feet of St. Patrick to the church. This piece has the eye appeal of a higher grade. LOT 66 (1652-74) St. Patrick Farthing, Martin 8a.1-Ba.3, Griffee 81-2/0a, Breen-218, R5+ PCGS graded VF30. Type with a “Martlet Alone Below King.” Glossy light to medium brown with chocolate brown in protected areas. Smooth and attractive but there is a dent on the left edge of St. Patrick that created a subtle bulge at the back of the king. The bulge was called a die state in the Martin auction catalog, but it is from the very-well-hidden dent. The obverse is slightly misaligned to the top while the reverse is nearly centered on the planchet. A spot of dark toning in the field over St. Patrick’s outstretched arm is the best identifying mark. Weight a hefty 105.0 grains. Type with “Two Annulets Below King.” Attractive glossy light to medium brown with chocolate toning in protected areas. Smooth with only trivial marks, very nice for the grade. The splasher is bright and it covers most of the crown with ample “splashes” to the left. The planchet is a bit thin at the rim left of the crown, and that caused strike weakness there and in the opposing area at K-1 on the reverse. Martin lists only 5 examples of this die pairing in his census. Both sides of this piece are plated in the 2018 Martin reference. Weight 77.6 grains. LOT 68 1722 Wood’s Hibernia Halfpenny Martin 4.1-Bb.1 R5 PCGS graded XF45. Choice glossy medium chocolate brown with lighter brown toning on the devices on the reverse. Smooth and very attractive with just a light touch of friction on the devices. The only notable mark is a small planchet fissure in the dentils over the first G in GEORGIVS. This piece was struck two times. The first impression was centered on the planchet and the second was about 5% off center to K-1.5. Obvious evidence of the double strike is present on both sides. LDS with strong die cracks on the right side of the reverse. Superior to the Martin plate coin for the die state. Our grade is EF40+. INDIANAPOLIS EAC 2024

LOT 70 1760 Voce Populi Halfpenny Nelson-12 with P Before Face R3 VF30. Ten points sharper but there is a thin fissure in the planchet from the rim at the top of the obverse through the nose into the field below. A corresponding fissure passes up through the 7 and front of the harp to the elbow. Otherwise the only defect is a splash of dark toning at the top of the obverse and bottom of the reverse, and the dark areas contain traces of very fine roughness. The planchet is not perfectly round, rather crude in fact, but the devices are bold. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate except for those smaller dark splashes. The repunching on the 6 is clear. Weight 114.8 grains.

LOT 73 1775 British Counterfeit Halfpenny F15. Glossy chocolate brown and steel. The date and legends are clear and there is an impressive set of die cracks on the upper reverse. Weight 96.9 grains.

LOT 80 1788 Connecticut Miller 4.1-K R5 Mailed Bust Right VF30. Rather glossy olive brown and steel.
