UNIQUE EARLY STATE 1798 NC-2 RARITY
yes LOT 217 1798 NC-2 R7 (Unique as a die state) Small 8, Style I Hair VG8 . Sharpness VF20 but covered with fine porosity on all but the highpoints, which are relatively smooth. No verdigris, and the only mark is a tiny, very light rim bruise under the right edge of the fraction. Dark olive brown and steel in the protected areas with medium brown toning on the highpoints. Sharply struck and well balanced with excellent details throughout. The date is bold and the legends are strong. Clearly this piece is the sharpest of the 7 examples known to us. This is the only example known without the cud break at RTY. Obviously the obverse die failed right away. This example has a fine die crack passing from the dentils over the right edge of the E through the tops of RTY, strongest from the left top of the R to the dentils over the E. Graded VF20 net VG7 and tied for CC#2 of the variety in the Noyes census, his photo #60708. A highlight of this sale. LOT 219 1799 S-189 R-2+ TDS Basal State-1 . Slightly glossy dark chocolate and steel brown. The surfaces are mostly smooth, though there is some light microscopic porosity and faint hairline scratches visible on both sides. The date is weak but can be made out in hand, especially 99. The portrait is mostly visible but the legends are nearly gone, and only parts of the wreath remain. There are appears to be a strong die failure causing a shelf from teh shoulder to the rim at the bust tip, and the area below the failure is clearly lower than the portion above. The shelf follows the die crack described by Breen as his die state VI and plated in Penny Whimsy, but no other example has been reported with this massive failure along the die crack.
LOT 218 1799 S-189 R2+ ANACS graded AG3 . Somewhat glossy dark olive brown. Looks smooth but a glass shows very fine roughness that covers the fields and protected areas. No verdigris and the only significant mark is a small chip out of the rim right of the D in UNITED. The bottom of the date is weak at best but the rest is easy to read as are most of the legends. MDS showing a subtle lump below the E in ONE. Our grade is AG3. The attribution is noted on the ANACS label. 2638302
