The Erik Schneckloth Collection

I bought my first large cent from John Jackson when I sold my full-horn Buffalo nickel collection. It was an S-187 in an NGC VF-20 holder. The die cracks were so cool. I thought it was special. I didn’t know at the time that’s how they all came. I bought the Noyes book and CQR and dreamed of owning a’93 cap. At the time I figured I could get to an S-13. But when I bough: that first cap I was hooked. I missed the Dan Holmes sale. It was on my Mom’s last birthday. She died the following April from complications of ALS. I was determined at the time to own that S-15. Not any S-15 but that one. When the Mervis sale came up in Orlando I was going for it. But my wife Beth said “You can do this, but no new money.” So I sold 2/3 of my collection. That included a PCGS MS-63 complete Buffalo set as well as most of my large cent date set. I raised 70k. Took the whole family to the sale. And came in third. Next time around I had new money (she relented this time) and new determination (as in more money). I couldn’t make it to the sale but John Jackson bought the Holmes coin for me. I did it. I finished my Heads of ‘93 set in 2019 with the purchase of an absolutely gorgeous S-1 la, then upgraded it a year later with the Husak/Boka S-18a. My top three include that coin as well as the Holmes S-15 and the Reynolds S-12. I also managed to acquire about 2/3 of the 94s before the fire went out. Late and terminal die states were my final early copper collecting interest. So now I’m back where I started over 50 years ago. I’m filling holes in blue Whitman folders. I finally finished the Lincoln cent collection I started in my childhood by purchasing the 09-S VDB. I also went back to my original love of Buffalo nickels. AU-63 or MS-58. Not nearly as expensive as early copper but still a challenge.

SHARP 1776 MACHIN’S MILLS

LOT 1

1652 Massachusetts Oak Tree Shilling, Noe 4 COPY F12 . Light to medium grey and lighter silver. No significant marks, just lightly worn. Weight 78.1 grains. A decent COPY of this iconic early American coinage. Ex Jim Skalbe, 2006 C-4 Sale, McCawley & Grellman Auctions 12/2/2006:2 (lot ticket included)

yes LOT 4

LOT 2

(1663-1672) St. Patrick Farthing (New Jersey) Breen-212, Griffee 31-5/3e G6 . Sharpness VF20 where properly struck but the impression is uneven, weak at the bottoms but strong elsewhere. Most of the devices are clear. The brass splasher is toned with traces of brighter brassy color remaining, mostly off to the right side of the crown. Griffee knew of 4 examples of this variety. Weight 95.1 grains.

1776 Machin’s Mills Vlack 6-76A, W-7790, Large Date R4+ VF30 . Rather glossy dark olive brown with underlying uniform fine granularity that covers the planchet. No verdigris and the only marks are a light nick in the hair under the second G in GEORGIVS, a couple small ticks on the lower part of the seated figure, and a small nick under the B in BRITAN. Sharply struck and nicely centered on the planchet. The date and legends are bold. Not perfect but certainly one of the finer examples known of this tough variety. Weight 120.8 grains.

From the Erik Schneckloth Collection

1785 Nova Constellatio Crosby 3-B R1 VF25 . Variety with Pointed Rays. Choice glossy brown and light chocolate. Smooth with trivial marks and light wear. A small chip out of the rim over the S in JUSTITIA is a good identifying mark. Weight 109.2 grains.

LOT 3

1788 Vermont Ryder-16 R1 VG10 . Choice glossy tan and light brown on the devices blending to light chocolate in protected areas. Smooth and virtually flawless, just worn. A minor planchet chip at the eye and a tiny one under the shield are the only marks, both as struck. The date is readable and the legends are strong. MDS before the obverse die cracked. Minor swelling in the center of the reverse weakens those central details. Weight 103.9 grains.

EARLY AMERICAN COPPER SOCIETY AUCTION 2025 RARE NJ 15-U EX SYD MARTIN

yes LOT 6

1786 New Jersey Maris 15-U R5+, the “Leaning Head” obverse, PCGS graded VG8 . Medium steel brown with slightly darker olive and steel in the fields and protected areas. Glossy on the devices but covered with microscopic roughness in the fields and protected areas. No verdigris or notable contact marks, but there are a few minor planchet flakes and fissures: one at the end of the plow beam, another just left of the U in UNUM, and a shallow flake right of the M. The date is clear as are the legends, but there is weakness at ERA due to minor swelling in that area. Called the “Leaning Head” obverse because the head tilts markedly back as if it is rearing up. A nice example of this rare variety, and it comes with an important provenance. Our grade is VG8. Weight 127.4 grains. The attribution and Sydney F. Martin Collection provenance are noted on the special PCGS label. 767876.08/44621905

Ex an unrecorded seller in Jacksonville, Florida, in August 2008-the Sydney F. Martin Collection, Stack’s Bowers 8/27/2022:8020 (lot ticket included)

1786 New Jersey Maris 16-L R2 F12 . Glossy medium reddish brown with some darker olive toning left of the shield where there are specks of greenish verdigris. Mostly smooth but the planchet suffers from very tiny planchet voids scattered over both sides (as struck). No contact marks. The date and legends are strong and this piece has nice eye appeal in spite of the imperfect planchet. LDS with obvious swelling at the chest of the horse. The “protruding tongue” from the horse’s mouth is visible (has a separate listing in the “Redbook”). Weight 142.9 grains.

LOT 7

LOT 9

1787 New Jersey Maris 29-L R4, Straight Plow Beam, ANACS graded F12 . Slightly glossy light to medium brown on the devices blending to olive brown in protected areas. Covered with microscopic porosity but there is no verdigris and no notable marks. The date and legends are strong except for weakness in the central part of the obverse thanks to swelling associated with the late die state. Struck slightly off center to K-2. Our grade is VF20 sharpness net F15. Weight 161.2 grains. The attribution is noted on the ANACS label. 7719898

1786 New Jersey Maris 18-M R1 VG10+ . A couple points sharper and choice if not for a scratch between the B and S in PLURIBUS. Glossy light to medium brown blending to darker reddish brown in protected areas. The date is clear and the legends are strong. The “Bridle” connecting the horse’s mouth to his chest is clear. Weight 149.9 grains.

1800 C-1 R2 NGC graded MS62 Red & Brown, CAC Approved . Lustrous bright original mint red fading to dark steel brown with about 70% of the obverse and 40% of the reverse showing the mint color. Microscopic contact marks cover much of this piece, more than your expect for a piece with this much original red, but none of the marks is significant or distracting. M-LDS, Manley state 4.0, Fuhrman state 4. The curl left of the date is now open and the dentils are weak but visible. Most likely this piece is a survivor from a small hoard (Breen estimated 30 100 pieces) discovered in the mid-1930’s in Boston. The pieces from this hoard came with significant mint color but are mostly “spotty red or faded red” according to Breen.
