EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 210 1798 S-183 R-5 AG3 . The reverse is a bit sharper but both sides are covered in fine porosity. There is also a dull scratch in the right obverse field, and minor rim bruises at E in UNITED and ES in STATES. Glossy medium brown and light steel. The date is very weak but can mostly be made out in hand, and the legends are fully readable. LDS.

LOT 207 1798 S-181 R3 Small 8, Style II Hair, PCGS graded VF20 . Glossy brown and light chocolate. The obverse is quite nice with trivial marks but the reverse has several obvious rim nicks and another nick under the E in STATES. LDS, Breen state IV, with die cracks on the obverse and a slightly raised retained cud connecting the bust to the rim. The Large 0’s over Small 0’s error in the denominator is clear. Our grade is F15+ sharpness net F12. The attribution and New Cumberland Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 36110.20/47927461

LOT 211 1798 S-185 R2 Small 8, Style II Hair VF20 . Glossy light olive and chocolate mixed with reddish brown on the reverse. Sharpness VF35 but there are some defects. Looks smooth to the unaided eye but a glass reveals microscopic roughness that may have been very lightly smoothed. No verdigris but there are some contact marks including a dull nick on the jawline and a few rim nicks on the obverse, the strongest one off the lower end of the hair ribbon. E-MDS, Breen state II, with die clashmarks on the reverse.

LOT 208 1798 S-182 R-4 VG8 . VF20 sharpness but there are two corrosion spots on the obverse before the neck and on the date, and notable nicks behind the mid and lower hair, and below F in OF. Smooth, glossy medium brown surfaces otherwise. LDS, partially obscured date due to the corrosion but full legends. Overall a nice coin if not for the couple spots.

LOT 212 1798 S-186 R2 Small 8, Style II Hair F15 . Ten points sharper but there is verdigris in protected areas, mostly on the lower part of the reverse. Small nicks are scattered over both sides, especially on the neck. Glossy olive brown and chocolate with slightly lighter steel brown on the devices. The obverse is attractive, the reverse not so much. MDS, Breen state VI, with die cracks on both sides, a rim cud under the fraction, and another small cud that fills about half of the inside of the second 0 in the denominator.

LOT 209 1798 S-183 R5 Small 8, Style II Hair VG8 . Sharpness at least F12 but covered with fine to moderate roughness, strongest on the reverse. No verdigris but there are some pits of digs in the field below the hair ribbon. Recolored a mix of light to medium brown and darker chocolate. The obverse is rather glossy. The bottom of the date is relatively weak, as always on this variety, but everything else is clear.
