EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 198 1798 S-156 R-5+ Reverse of 1796 PCGS VF Details (Environmental Damage) . VG sharpness but a light layer of oxidation gives a somewhat matte appearance and very faint microgranluarity on the surfaces. Various minor nicks are scattered on the devices and fields, a couple above the hair braid and one in the right field before the mouth the best identifying. LDS with the strong die rbeak through the bust tip to the rim, fully readable legends with a nice bold daet. Called F12 net G5 by Noyes, his photo #32013. Our grade is VG10 net G5. 36005.97/47927454

LOT 199 1798 S-158 R-4 G6 . Near VF sharpness but pitted on the obverse, light roughness on the reverse. Cleaned and now toned faded red and bluish steel, the reverse with a brighter strip of red where it was likely taped on something. LDS with a strong die break through T in UNITED, the left wreath, and AT in STATES. Full date and legends.

Ex Douglas F. Bird-Erik Schneckloth Collection (includes the Bird sales ticket)

LOT 202 1798 S-166 R1 Large 8, Style II Hair VF20 . Sharpness EF40 where properly struck but there is significant weakness at the bust, 98, and opposing upper right part of the reverse. The strike is usually weak in these areas but this is one of the weakest. Glossy dark olive and mostly smooth but there are small patches of fine verdigris on the reverse. A mark on the cheek and a diagonal scratch just right of the E in ONE are the notable marks. MDS, Breen state IV, with the usual die cracks and a small rim cud at ST. The reverse is rotated 35 degrees CCW. Our grade is EF40 net F15. Weight 159.8 grains, just a bit under the 168-grain standard.

LOT 201 1798 S-164 R4 Small 8, Style I Hair F12 . Sharpness EF40 with fine roughness and scratches on both sides. Slightly glossy brown and light chocolate. The roughness is strongest on the right side of the wreath where there are traces of verdigris. A rim bruise at the first A in AMERICA is a good identifying mark. MDS, Breen state II, with minor swelling around the date.
