EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

EXTREMELY RARE LATE STATE 1796 NC-4

LOT 180 1796 NC-1 R-6 Reverse of 1797 G5 . VG sharpness but lightly smoothed and now free of marks except a couple tiny pinpricks. Those pinpricks are in the top of the lower hair curls, and the right obverse field at 3 o’clock, hardly noteworthy but the best identifying marks. The obverse is a pleasing light brown, the revers a deeper chocolate, with fully readable date and legends.

LOT 181 1796 NC-3 R-6 Reverse of 1797 G4 . VG sharpness but the surfaces are lightly rough with traces of old verdigris around AMERICA. The marks inlcude rim bumps at RTY in LIBERTY, under 96, and a rim nick just behind the lower hair curls. Deep steel brown patina. Though weaker along the upper reverse, the date and legends are fully readable.

yes LOT 183 1796 NC-4 R5+ Draped Bust VG8 . Rather glossy

dark chocolate brown with steel brown toning on the highpoints. The surfaces are mostly smooth and this cent has nice eye appeal for the grade. The notable marks are a small dig in the field just left of the hair ribbon, a small planchet chip right of the L, a thin nick on the jaw near the throat, and a long diagonal nick over the N in ONE. The date is clear and the legends are strong. Extremely rare terminal die state, Breen state II, with a strong die crack through TES. The area above this crack is clearly sunken into a retained cud. Tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census as F12 net VG8, his photo #32703. Called VG8 and tied for CC#4 in the Bland census. Most likely the finest known of the die state (we know of 3 others, all in lower grade). This die state was not known to Sheldon and is not plated in the Breen or Noyes books. A very important cent. LOT 182 1796 NC-3 R-6 BS1 . A large perfectly round hole is drilled through with two more crude, square nail holes on either side of it. Enough detail remains to attribtue this as an NC-3, of which there are only a couple dozen examples known, and this is possibly the only holed one. What purpose this was intended to serve is unknown, but clearly this coin has a story to tell.
