EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 173 1796 S-99 R5 Draped Bust VG7 . Several points sharper but there are three small pits at the L in LIBERTY and about a dozen more on the reverse. These pits contain light green verdigris. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and quite nice for the grade. The only other marks are light vertical hairline scratches on the face, a minor rim bruise at the I in LIBERTY, and a dig at the feet of RI in AMERICA. Glossy medium chocolate with lighter steel brown highpoints. LDS, Breen state III, with a slightly raised but very large retained cud break at the back of the portrait. Graded net VG7 by Bland. Noyes says F15 sharpness net VG7, his photo #28232. Removed from a PCGS holder as VF Details, Scratch (PCGS label #35831.95/28659343 included, and it shows the attribution). Comes with a nice provenance.

LOT 170 1796 S-86 R-5 AG3 . The obverse is VG7 net G4 due to porosity, a hairline scratch behind the eye up through T to the rim, and notabkle nicks under the date and along the rims to the left as well as over E in LIBERTY. The reverse is FR2. Previously cleaned and now light brown and medium steel browns. Full date, LIBERTY, and portrait.

LOT 174 1796 S-112 R-4+ VG8 . Golden brown with ligthly scattered microporosity and a bit of old scale on the lower reverse. There are some faint vertical hairline scratches in the left obverse field, one from M through the wreath, and a tiny rim nick left of the fraction. The central reverse is weak as is usual on this variety, but the remaining legends and date are clear. Decent appeal for the grade.

LOT 171 1796 S-94 R-5+ Reverse of 1797 VG7 . F15 sharpness but covered with fine roughness, more moderate aroudn the obverse peripheries. Dark brown and steel brown patina. Free of notable marks. The date is weak but readable, as are the legends.

LOT 172 1796 S-94 R-5+ G4 . Glossy light chocolate brown surfaces with the obverse triple counterstamped with an early style, serrated rectangle stamp with a P as the second initial of the merchant. Clear date, partial but mostly readable legends. Glossy smooth surfaces on this rare variety.

LOT 175 1796 S-114 R5- Draped Bust VG8 . Sharpness near F12 but covered with fine roughness under rather glossy dark olive brown and steel toning. The highpoints are a lighter shade of steel brown. There are barely visible specks of reddish verdigris on the reverse and a some very fine scratches hidden in the toning on the portrait. EDS, Breen state I, before any die cracks on the obverse. The date is bold and the legends are clear with a few weak letters on both sides.
