EARLY AMERICAN COPPER SOCIETY AUCTION 2025 DOUBLE STRUCK OFF CENTER

yes LOT 165 1795 S-78 R1 Plain Edge, NGC Good Details, Obv Damage . Glossy chocolate brown and steel. Smooth with minor marks except for a rosette of intentional dents covering the neck--a poor excuse for a counterstamp. The areas not affected by the stamping would grade at least G5. Double struck. The first impression was centered; the second was about 35% off center to K-3 and rotated about 45 degrees clockwise relative to the first strike. The date from the initial strike was obliterated by the second strike, but the 179 from the second is clear (the 9 is partial). A dramatic mint error, just too bad about the crude “counterstamp.” Our grade is G5 sharpness net Fair-2. The “2nd Strike Off Center” error is noted on the NGC label. 6602097-019

LOT 168 1796 S-82 R5 Liberty Cap Fair-2+ . The obverse is sharper with a strong date but the reverse is weaker. Rather dull with microscopic roughness on all but the highpoints. No verdigris, just light contact marks including a couple very fine scratches on the upper half of the reverse. Olive brown and steel with lighter toning on the devices. MDS. Close to AG3 overall.

LOT 166 1796 S-81 R3 Liberty Cap G4+ . The obverse is sharper, the reverse weaker, perhaps a 6/3 split. Rather glossy steel brown on the devices with darker olive brown and steel in protected areas. The only notable mark is a narrow planchet void at the rim over NI in UNITED (as struck). The date is strong but ONE CENT is gone thanks to wear and minor swelling in the center of the reverse. A decent lower-grade example.

LOT 169 1796 S-86 R5 Liberty Cap G4 . The obverse is sharper, the reverse weaker (as usual on worn examples of this variety), a 6/3 split. Reasonably smooth with decent eye appeal for the grade, but extremely fine granularity covers the planchet. No verdigris and the only notable mark is a nick in the hair left of the neck. A curved planchet clip affects only the dentils at the L in LIBERTY. The date is strong and most of the legends on the reverse are easily readable. EDS, Breen state I, with minor swelling at the 6 but before any crumbling on the profile.

LOT 167 1796 S-81 R-3 AG3 . The obverse is G6, while the reverse is FR2. Medium brown mottled with deep ebony corrosion, stronger on the obverse which has been smoothed to minimize the roughness. LIBERTY, the portrait, and the date are full and bold.
