EARLY AMERICAN COPPER SOCIETY AUCTION 2025

LOT 153 1794 S-62 R4+ G5+ . The obverse is slightly sharper, the reverse a bit weaker. Smooth and quite nice for the grade, just worn. A thin nick under the earlobe is the only notable mark. The date and LIBERTY are complete and clear as is most of the legend on the reverse. LDS with a clearly defined cud break on the left side of the obverse, one of the largest cud breaks in the entire Sheldon series.

LOT 156 1794 S-64 R-5- G5 . 5 points sharper but there is porosity covering the fields and lower devices. Free of notable marks. Glossy dark olive brown. The fraction area is faint but partially visible. LDS.

LOT 157 1794 S-66 R5+ PCGS graded G4 . The obverse is sharper, the reverse weaker, perhaps a 5+/3 split. Covered with very fine roughness but no verdigris. There are some marks including a vertical nick in the hair at the shoulder, an obvious pit or planchet void in the field close off the chin, and a small rim bruise left of the lowest curl. Rather glossy chocolate and olive brown. The date and LIBERTY are clear and about two-thirds of the legends on the reverse remain readable. M-LDS, Breen state III. The crack from the end of the pole is strong. Our grade is net AG3+. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. 35657.04/38415376

LOT 154 1794 S-63 R2 (1793 Smith Counterfeit) G5 . The host S-63 has VG8 sharpness, strongest on the obverse, but there is fine to moderate roughness on both sides. Slightly glossy chocolate brown with some dull contact marks at the rim on the reverse. The date was skillfully altered to “1793” and LIBERTY was strengthened. The alteration is suggestive of the work seen on the popular “Smith” counterfeits that were 1794 cents altered to 1793. A nice conversation piece but a poor substitute for a 1793 large cent or even a 1794 S-63 at this point.

LOT 155 1794 S-64 R5- Missing Fraction Bar, PCGS graded VG8 . Slightly glossy steel and chocolate brown. The surfaces are smooth but there are some small contact marks, mostly inside the wreath and at the top of the reverse. A rim bruise at the M in AMERICA is the only significant mark. The obverse is stronger than the reverse thanks to the late die state that caused significant swelling in the center of the wreath. The radial crack through the D in UNITED is bold and a small cud break fills much of the inside part of that D. The denominator is weak, as always on the late die state, and the Missing Fraction Bar feature is no longer visible. The date, however, is bold. Our grade is VG8. The No Fraction Bar feature is noted on the PCGS label. 911374.08/84363111

LOT 158 1794 S-72 R2 Exact Head of 1795 F15 . Sharpness near VF35 but the obverse fields have been carefully smoothed to remove a few scratches. The reverse is sharp and untouched. The best identifying mark is a tiny planchet flake under the corner of the eye. Recolored frosty chocolate and olive brown with some lighter brown on the obverse and steel overtones on the reverse. MDS, Breen state III, with die cracks on both sides. Looks quite impressive at first glance.
