EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
LOT 150 1794 S-56 R-3 Office Boy PCGS XF Details (Environmental Damage) . VF35 sharpness but covered with uniform microgranularity on all but the highest points. There are also minor rim bruises below 17, at U in UNITED, and over the last S in STATES, as well has a nick at the middle of the lower cap. Semi-glossy medium chocolate brown with die break from the hair below the cap to the rim. The sloppy reverse layout identifies this as the “Office Boy” variety. Our grade is VF20. 35630.97/47927420
Ex; D&S Coins via Tom Reynolds 1/1993 - New Cumberland Collection
LOT 148 1794 S-53 R6 AG3+ . The obverse is G5 but the reverse is AG3 and has some contact marks. No roughness or verdigris and the eye appeal of the obverse is quite nice for the grade. The notable marks are a minor rim bruise left of the date, a few small rim nicks on both sides, and two scuffs of fine scratches that form an “X” on the reverse with the crossing point under the E in CENT. These scratches effectively weaken the O in ONE and CENT, but most of the legend outside the wreath is still visible, just weak. The date is complete and clear. Glossy light to medium chocolate brown with slightly lighter brown toning on the devices. Graded G4 net Fair-2 by Noyes, his photo #36440. Bland says net AG3. Comes with a nice provenance.
LOT 151 1794 S-58 R3 VG10 . Five points sharper but covered with fine roughness that includes a collection of microscopic pits on the cheek and another in the field close to the chin. Lightly cleaned and nicely retoned glossy light olive and steel brown blending to darker olive brown in protected areas. No verdigris or notable contact marks. LDS, Breen state III late or IV early. The area outside the crack at UNIT is raised as a retained cud, but that section of the die has not fallen away completely and most of UNIT remains readable. A very interesting intermediate die state.

LOT 152 1794 S-60 R3 VF20 . Glossy steel and light olive brown. Slightly sharper with a few minor marks including a few ticks at the throat, a thin diagonal planchet fissure through the denominator, a collection of light nicks left of the first A in AMERICA, and a tiny rim bruise at IC in AMERICA. E-MDS, Breen state II late, with strong die clashmarks below LIB and a clear die crack from the left top of the cap.
LOT 149 1794 S-55 R2 VG7 . Sharpness VF20+ but covered with moderate roughness under rather glossy dark olive brown and steel toning. There are a few small patches of raised hard verdigris on the reverse, especially at MER. This cent has the look of a piece that was lost in soil for a while. A rim dent just right of the second S in STATES is the only significant contact mark. EDS. Sharp but ugly.
