EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
LOT 38 1804 C-6 New Die State M9.5+ Fuhrman 13+ AG3 . VG sharpness but cleaned and now toned faded orange and bluish steel with notable dents on the portrait, lower reverse, and around the rims. Despite this the legends and date remain readable. We believe this is the discovery coin for this die state discovered by Ed Fuhrman that was not known to Manley or Fuhrman at the time his book was published. The cud over I in AMERICA is now complete with the cud over CA still retained. One of two known. 84.0 grains.

1804 C-7 R4 Spiked Chin VF35 . Slightly sharper but there are microscopic hairlines on the obverse. The only notable contact mark is a diagonal nick in the hair at the forehead. Chocolate brown with frost in protected areas on the reverse. Sharply struck EDS, Manley state 1.0, Fuhrman 1, before any die cracks on the reverse. An important example of this rare variety with sharpness comparable to the famous Showers-Missouri Cabinet example (McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 1/26/2014:68) that brought $13,800. At the lower end of the condition census for this tough die variety Acquired at a small coin show in Hartford, CT, 4/1984 by Robert E. 1804 C-7 R4 Spiked Chin PCGS graded XF40 . Frosty chocolate brown and steel with peeps of lighter steel brown in protected areas. Slightly dull from a thin coat of natural oxidation; easily remedied by a proper brushing. Nicely struck with light wear on the devices. The only notable defect is a very shallow planchet flake on the shoulder, as struck and visible only under magnification. Very rare M-LDS, Manley state 6.0, Fuhrman state 7, with a strong cud break at OF-A that touches the O. This is the Manley state coin for the die state in his 1998 reference The Half Cent Die State Book 1793-1857. Our grade is EF40 net VF35. The Spiked Chin feature is noted on the PCGS label. 1075.40/20278155 Ex Roger S. Cohen, Jr., Superior 2/2/1992:177-Doug Roether-Bruce Hickmott-Thomas D.
