EARLY AMERICAN COPPER SOCIETY AUCTION 2025

LOT 766 1794 S-58 Electrotype COPY VF20 . Another deceptive copy with credible edge lettering. The edge lettering was added after the edge seam was smoothed away. Glossy light olive and tan. Portions of the edge on the reverse are uneven but otherwise this one was very well executed.

LOT 770 1798 S-173 Cast COPY VF20 . Sharper but a bit rough with tiny lumps from the casting process and traces of corrosion. White metal or lead.

Ex Denis W. Loring Collection 7/29/1987-Pete Smith (includes the Smith collection envelope)

Ex Denis W. Loring Collection 12/5/1988-Pete Smith (includes the Smith collection envelope)

LOT 771 1799/8 S-188 Electrotype COPY F12 . May be a cast copy. Dark steel and olive brown with lighter steel brown on the highpoints. A few nicks with fine roughness, especially under AT in STATES. Rather deceptive.

LOT 767 1795 S-75 Cast COPY in White Metal or Lead VG8 . Sharper details but imperfect. Dark olive brown and steel with light roughness over much of the planchet. Shows a couple die cracks that are not known on the variety. Plain edge.

Ex Denis W. Loring Collection 7/29/1987-Pete Smith (includes the Smith collection envelope)

LOT 772 1799/8 S-188 Electrotype COPY F12 . Slightly glossy dark olive brown with a bit of lighter brown on a few highpoints. Covered with microscopic roughness and there is a wave across the obverse from K-2 to K-8. Traces of a seam are visible on the edge but this is another deceptive copy.

LOT 768 1795 S-80 Jefferson Head Electrotype COPY EF40 . A nice copy of the ANS example, the finest known of the variety. Glossy light to medium chocolate with traces of base metal on the highest points of the hair. Plain edge that effectively hides the electrotype seam.

Ex Rodney C. Burress (includes the Burress sales envelope)

Ex Denis W. Loring Collection 7/29/1987-Pete Smith (includes the Smith collection envelope)

LOT 773 1799/8 S-188 Electrotype COPY F12 . A copy made from the same coin as the preceding lot but with sharper details and no wave across the obverse. However this one has fine porosity in a few areas. Slightly glossy dark olive brown and steel with a few spots of lighter brown on the obverse. Quite deceptive.

LOT 769 1795 S-80 Jefferson Head Electrotype Copy VG10 . Mostly light brown with the base metal showing on most of the high points and scattered corrosion spots from the underlying lead. There is notable damage and filing along the edges, and scattered nicks and scratches on either side. Despite that the details are sharp on this electrotype copy of the “Jefferson Head” cent coined by John Harper.
