EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

 DRAMATIC MINT ERROR

yes LOT 460 1853 N-6 R1 F15/X . Rather glossy light olive blending to reddish light chocolate in protected areas. There are a few marks including a dull one in the hair above the E and some more on star 12. Who cares! What matters is the dramatic mint error and split planchet. The first strike was about 10% off center to K-11 and the second was centered on the planchet but rotated about 35 degrees clockwise relative to the first. The planchet cracked in several places and separated into two pieces with other incomplete fissures waiting for the right moment to separate. OK, maybe that’s too dramatic, but you can see the additional fissures and you may want to use extra caution when handling the coin just in case. The planchet must have been brittle, perhaps a result of multiple strikes that hardened the metal. Bold undertype is visible on both sides and a complete but faint “3” from the first strike shows left of star 11. A wonderful mint error and a great conversation piece.

LOT 463 1853 N-30 R1 AU50+ . Glossy chocolate and light olive with sea-green overtones in protected areas. Lightly worn on the highpoints with no notable marks. M-LDS, die state b.

LOT 461 1853 N-13 R1 Repunched 1 AU55 . A mint state cent that was nicely retoned frosty light olive and steel brown with traces of light mahogany in protected areas. No notable marks. LDS, die state b. The fields are flowlined but the repunching at the base of the 1 is visible.

LOT 462 1853 N-25 R-1 PCGS AU55 CAC . Attractive light brown wtih light olive brown on some of the fields and high points. There is a bit of crud built up very lightly in some of the reverse protected areas, and one trivial tick between stars 6-7. EDS(a). Satiny, lustrous surfaces with nice eye appeal. Our grade is AU50. 403927.55/26780053

LOT 464 1854 N-6 R1 AU50 . Sharpness close to mint state but there is a small but obvious rim bruise at star 5; otherwise this cent is choice. Glossy light to medium brown with luster in the fields and protected areas. MDS, die state b late. The die lines from the dentils at star 2 are weak but still visible.
