EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 442 1849/8 N-8 R2 Overdate 9 over 8 VF35 . Five points sharper with small marks including a collection of tiny pinpricks at TES-O. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate. E-MDS, die state c, with dull die lines near the dentils at stars 2-4 and die cracks on the reverse. The reverse was struck with a doubled die (a real doubled die, not strike doubling), and the doubling is obvious on the legend left of the wreath. The bottom of the 8 is clearly visible at the right bottom of the 9.

LOT 445 1850 N-5 R4 AU50 . Glossy light to medium olive. Smooth and very attractive with just a hint of friction on the highest points of the devices. Nearly flawless: a tiny tick on the eyebrow and a small planchet flake over the B in LIBERTY are the only marks, and they are microscopic. E-MDS, die state b early. The fields are lightly flowlined and the vertical line down from the inner hair bun is clear.

Ex G. Les Dawson, McCawley & Grellman Auctions 1/11/1997:586-R. S. “Robbie” Brown, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 6/2/2002:791-Superior 2/11/2007:248 (includes the Brown collection envelope plus the first and last lot tickets)

LOT 443 1849 N-12 R-1 PCGS AU58 CAC Approved . Attractive light chocolate brown with light olive on some high points and a maroon spot below ES in STATES. The marks include a vertical nick on the upper neck, a smaller one on the bridge of the nose, and a few nicks on the dentils at UN in UNITED. E-MDS(a). Frosty, lustrous surfaces, especially the reverse. Our grade is XF45+ . 1886.58/28007684

LOT 446 1850 N-7 R-1 NGC MS64BN CAC Approved . Frosty light steel brown with 10% of faded mint red remaining on both sides and tiny steel spots on the obverse. M-LDS(b). There is a tiny carbon speck in the dentils over star 5, otherwise free of notable marks. Frosty, lustrous surfaces with great eye appeal. Our grade is MS62. 3740059-003

LOT 447 1850 N-19 R2 PCGS graded MS62 Brown . Frosty light steel brown with a stain of slightly darker olive brown and steel on the left side of the reverse. A mint state cent but the stain does affect the eye appeal. No contact marks but here are a couple tiny specks of greenish verdigris inside the D in UNITED. EDS, die state a. The lump between the 1 & 8 (top of a stray 1) is clear and fine diagonal die lines show in the fields on the lower half of the obverse. Our grade is AU58.

LOT 444 1849 N-30 R5+ F12 . Attractive glossy light brown. Smooth with minor contact marks. A small nick on the nose before the bottom of the eye can help identify this cent. EDS, die state a, before crumbling inside the top of the N in ONE. The die lines used for attribution are sharp.
