EARLY AMERICAN COPPER SOCIETY AUCTION 2025

1847 N-26 WITH TWO RIM CUDS

yes LOT 408 1847 N-26/17 R3+ VF35+ . Sharpness AU50 but there are microscopic traces of extremely fine carbon or verdigris on both sides, mostly on the obverse. Just a few small marks including some ticks on the jaw and neck plus a small nick in the dentils at star 10. The fields on the obverse are covered with very fine die rust (tiny lumps on the coin), as always on this variety. Frosty medium brown and light chocolate with small splashes of darker olive brown on the obverse. Very rare LDS, die state f, with a strong rim cud break over TE in STATES in addition to the earlier one at OF-A (Newcomb’s #17). Both cuds are bold. CC#1 of only 12 known in the Grellman census. Only 4 in the census grade VF20 or better, and the piece offered here has the best surfaces of the group. Looks better than the description may imply; could easily be called EF40.

LOT 410 1847 N-28 R4+ Repunched 4, PCGS graded MS62 Brown . Glossy light to medium brown with a tiny splash of darker chocolate brown toning on the N in ONE. Satiny mint frost covers the protected areas on both sides and this cent has very nice eye appeal. Looks choice mint state but there is a hint of rub on the highest points of the devices. E-MDS, die state b, with fine die cracks on the reverse but no rim cuds. The repunching under the crossbar of the 4 is clear. Our grade is AU58, tied for CC#10 in the Grellman census. Comes with a very nice provenance. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label.

LOT 409 1847 N-27 R4 Repunched 18, PCGS graded MS62 Brown . Frosty light brown with peeps of faded red on the reverse. Looks mint state but there is a trace of friction on the highpoints and a few small marks, mostly in the field near the chin. Very tiny specks of greenish crud can be found tucked into protected areas on both sides, mostly on the reverse. LDS, die state c late, with all the die cracks on the reverse listed in the Grellman reference. The repunching on the 18 remains clear. Our grade is AU55. 1877.62/22130613
