EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
CONDITION CENSUS 1847 N-26
yes LOT 405 1847 N-26/17 R3+ NGC graded MS65 Red & Brown . Lustrous light olive and bluish steel with about 20% of the planchet showing slightly mellowed mint red. This cent has outstanding eye appeal but a glass reveals a very fine scratch that meanders down the neck. A small, shallow low spot is located in the field below the chin and a small splash of electric-blue toning covers the ribbon loop below the end of the stem (which is the best identifying mark). MDS, die state c, with several die fine die cracks on the reverse but no rim cuds. The field before the portrait is covered with microscopic lumps thanks to fine die rust (as usual). Our grade is MS63+ net MS62. Tied for CC#5 in the Grellman census. The attribution is noted on the NGC label. Comes with a nice provenance that has been traced back nearly 100 years. 1633406-004

LOT 406 1847 N-26/17 R3+ PCGS graded AU58 . Glossy light to medium brown on the obverse with medium chocolate covering the reverse. Faint hints of underlying very faded mint color show in a couple protected areas, mostly inside the left part of the wreath. Nicely struck with radial lines in all the stars. The only notable marks are a tiny spot of darker toning in the field close to the middle of the nose and another in the hair well above the R. Both spots are barely visible. MDS, die state c. The reverse is cracked but there are no rim cuds, and the obverse fields are covered with tiny lumps caused by die rust (as nearly always on this variety). Our grade is MS60. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 37328.58/40615501
LOT 407 1847 N-26/17 R3+ F15 . Glossy medium brown on the devices blending to chocolate brown in protected areas. There are traces of microscopic roughness on the obverse, mostly between the mouth and star 3, but overall the surfaces are decent. M-LDS, die state e, with a worn but clearly visible rim cud over OF-A (Newcomb’s #17). Not in the overall condition census for the variety but tied for CC#11 of the die state in the Grellman census.
