EARLY AMERICAN COPPER SOCIETY AUCTION 2025 LATE STATE 1847 N-23 WITH CUD
yes LOT 402 1847 N-23 R5 AU55 . Frosty light olive and bluish steel with very faded mint red in protected areas, mostly on the obverse. Looks mint state but there is a hint of friction on the very highest points of the devices. A tiny struck-through line at the tip of the nose can help identify this cent (as struck). LDS, die state e, with strong die cracks on the reverse and a small but strong rim cud over the second S in STATES. Tied for CC#8 of the variety but third finest of those few known with the cud break in the Grellman census. Ex Chris McCawley 2/1990-R. S. “Robbie” Brown, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 6/2/2002:424 (includes the Brown collection envelope) 1847 N-24 EDS EX NAFTZGER
yes LOT 403 1847 N-24 R1 MS63 . Very attractive lustrous light olive with at least 10% of the planchet showing slightly faded mint red. Sharply struck and nearly flawless. A very small tick on the rim off the upper point of star 4 and a tiny speck of darker brown toning over the right top of the T in CENT are the best identifying marks. EDS, die state a, with strong diagonal die lines covering the fields on the obverse. Tied for CC#7 in the Grellman census. A very nice example of a neat die state, and it comes with a great provenance. Ex Bruno Crossfield 12/1956-Willard C. Blaisdell 9/15/1976 (via Del Bland)-R. E. “Ted” Naftzger, Jr.-Del Bland Collection, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 1/25/2015:674 (includes the Crossfield/Blaisdell/Naftzger/Bland collection envelope, the Bland provenance notes, the Bland photos, and the lot ticket)
LOT 404 1847 N-24 R1 PCGS graded MS62 Brown . Frosty medium olive and steel brown with traces of underlying very faded mint color on both sides. The only marks are a puff of lighter golden tan toning at star 3 and another at NITE; there are no notable contact marks. A very shallow low spot covers much of the field behind the portrait (caused by a very thin layer of grease or debris on the die), but everything else is sharp. M-LDS, die state c (Newcomb’s old #25), with a fine die crack through the top of ME to the dentils at both ends. Our grade is MS60. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label.
Ex Bowers & Merena 11/11/1999:388 (as MS64RB)-Colonel Steven K. Ellsworth Collection, Goldbergs 9/26/2021:123 (includes the Ellsworth collection envelope and both lot tickets)
