Torres Half Cent Collection

EARLY CENTS

LOT 97 1842 Second Restrike Proof, Breen 1-C R7-, Proof 64 Brown NGC. The obverse is a mix of tan and bluish olive brown while the reverse is a more uniform medium steel brown and light chocolate with a few small splashes of tan. The fields are nicely reflective and there are no notable spots or contact marks other than the fine adjustment marks around the reverse rim that were added at the mint. Most 1842 Second Restrikes were struck on thick, heavy planchets (Breen’s planchet stock V), and a high wire rim was created during the strike. This knife rim was considered a flaw and it was carefully removed at the mint before the coins were sold to collectors. Our grade is Proof-63. Weight 95.7 grains. The Breen-3 (1-C) attribution and Donald G. Partrick Collection provenance are noted on the NGC label. 5747064-004 $6,500 Ex Jon Hanson 6/23/1973-Donald Groves Partrick Collection, Heritage Auctions 8/20/2021:3583

LOT 98 1846 Proof Original, Breen 1-A R6, Proof 63 Brown PCGS, CAC Approved. Light to medium brown with tan in protected areas. Sharply struck with reflective fields. An attractive piece but there is an obvious spot at star 1 and a speck of light green verdigris at the dentils off the lower left point of star 4. Otherwise just trivial marks and faint hairlines. The style of the digits in the date is unique to 1846 proof half cents, Originals and Restrikes. The numerals are thinner than normal and, according to Walter Breen, may have been hand-engraved. Why a normal logotyped date was not used for this obverse die is unknown. Our grade is Proof-60. The “Original” attribution is noted on the PCGS label. 1284.63/50053241 $14,000 Ex Heritage Auctions 8/13/2006:135-Poulos Family Collection, Part II, Heritage Auctions 9/6/2019:4592-Chris McCawley 6/4/2021-The J. LOT 99 1849 First Restrike Proof, Breen 1-B R6, Proof 63 Brown PCGS, CAC Approved. The obverse is brown and light chocolate; the reverse is a mix of light brown and darker olive and bluish steel with traces of lighter reddish tan in protected areas. Sharply struck except for the usual weakness on the 8 in the date. The fields are reflective and the only notable marks are a small struck-through line in the field over the end of the nose (caused by a tiny piece of lint on the planchet or die) and a speck of darker toning on the rim off the upper point of star 3 (barely visible in the holder). All 1849 half cents with a small date are proof strikes; a very few of the large date version are proof strikes but the vast majority are business strikes. Our grade is Proof-60+. The Small Date, Restrike classification is noted on the PCGS label. 1305.63/06393305 $10,000 Ex The Poulos Family Collection, Part II, Heritage Auctions 9/6/2019:4599 (PCGS PR63BN, OGH #1305.63/6393305)-Chris McCawley 6/4/2021-The J.
