Torres Half Cent Collection

LOT 95

1836 Proof Original, Breen 1-A R5+, Proof 63 Brown PCGS. Dark olive and bluish steel with slightly lighter toning on the highpoints. Sharp with reflective fields and no planchet flaws or notable contact marks. There is no hint of buckling in the center of the obverse (as seen on the First Restrikes that used the same pair of dies, and the edges are not squared). A choice piece except for about a dozen very tiny specks of greenish crud hidden in protected places. The only obvious bit of crud is caked along the left bottom of star 13. About 40 of the original strikes are known and several of those are circulated, impaired, or impounded in museum collections. This is a nice one in spite of the tiny specks of crud. Our grade is Proof-62 . The “Original” strike status of this piece is noted on the PCGS label. (The holder is lightly scratched.) 1207.63/20474279 $12,000 Ex Heritage Auctions 7/26/2003:5130-Chris McCawley 8/14/2023-The J. Torres Collection of Half Cents

LOT 96 1841 Proof Original, Breen 1-A R5-, Proof 62 Brown PCGS, CAC Approved. Glossy dark brown and light chocolate with lighter brown on the highpoints and darker steel blue in protected areas. The only marks are a very tiny tick low on the front edge of the neck and microscopic hairlines in the fields on both sides. This is the plate coin for the 1841 obverse on page 115 in the 1982 Cohen reference. These were struck on planchets that had a reeded edge, but the tight collar effectively eliminated most of the reeding during the strike. Fortunately traces of the reeding are still visible in the pronged holder. A sharp, very attractive piece in spite of the hairlines. Our grade is Proof-60. The “Original” status is noted on the PCGS label. 1254.62/38142254 $8,500 Ex Delaware Coin 11/28/1969-Jules Reiver, Heritage Auctions 1/24/2006:19132 (as NGC PR63BN)-Chris McCawley 1/18/2020-The J.
