Torres Half Cent Collection

EARLY CENTS

LOT 68 1809 C-1 R4 AU55 PCGS. Frosty light chocolate with golden tan highlights and hints of bluish steel overtones. Sharp with just a touch of friction on the devices, but there are some small marks. A spot of darker toning and a diagonal nick right of star 5, another nick on the jaw, one more at the bottom of the eye, and a well-hidden one in the hair over the I are the only notable marks. MDS, Manley state 2.0, Fuhrman state 1, with a fine die crack through MERICA. This is the plate coin for the variety in the 1998 Manley reference and the reverse was plated by David Proskey in the February 1881 issue of the Coin Collector’s Journal as his reverse C. Our grade is EF45. One of the finest known examples of this tough die variety. Clearly finer than the Missouri Cabinet example (also graded AU55 by PCGS but net VF35 by our standards) that brought $57,500 in the January 2014 auction of that famous collection. The attribution and McGuigan provenance are noted on the PCGS label. (The holder is scratched.) 35218.55/30451273 $48,000 Ex John Gulde (circa 1973)-James R.
