Torres Half Cent Collection
EARLY CENTS
LOT 64 1807 C-1 R1 Repunched 7, AU58 PCGS. The obverse is frosty olive brown and steel with a line of lighter tan toning at the dentils behind the head and a few tiny peeps of mint color around the portrait. The reverse is steel brown and light chocolate with mellowed mint red covering at least a third of that side. Looks mint state with nothing more than a hint of rub on the highest points of the portrait, but there are a few small contact marks. The notable marks are a small horizontal nick on the shoulder, a nick or thin planchet void at the dentils below the bust, a nick at the top of the C in CENT, and another at the berry below. LDS, Manley state 3.0, Fuhrman state 4, with no dentils remaining on the obverse and strong die flowlines in the fields on that side. The repunching on the 7 is weak but visible. Looks like a piece that never saw circulation. Our grade is AU58 . 35203.58/13057057 $3,500 Ex William Eckberg-Chris McCawley 6/2/2017-The J. Torres Collection of Half Cents
LOT 65
1808/7 C-1 PCGS G DETAIL. Deep chocolate olive color. There is some extensive pitting on the obverse and light corrosion on both sides. Struck with slightly mmisaigned dies as are all examples known to me. This example is an especially rare early die state prior to the reverse cracks. Plated in Cohen as well as Manley. Only two examples of the early state are known. A “sweat equity” purchase from Ricky Gross by Roger Cohen, earlier Steve Fischer and Fred Borchardt. Sold in Roger’s February 1992 sale as lot 245, thence to JRF-MRB. Technical sharpness VG. Our net grade AG3. A rare opportunity. $25,000
