Torres Half Cent Collection
LOT 61 1806 C-4 R1 Repunched Large 6, AU55 PCGS. Steel brown and light chocolate with frosty lighter brown and tan in protected areas. Lighter brown and tan toning dominates the reverse. No defects, just light friction on the devices. A speck of dark toning in the field left of the lower curls is the best identifying mark. The luster is a bit subdued thanks to a thin layer of oxidation. EDS, Manley state 1, with clear repunching on the Large 6. Struck with the reverse rotated about 60 degrees clockwise relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. The bust is nicely struck, which is uncommon for this variety, but there is some weakness at ICA and the leaves below. Our grade is EF45. 1099.55/12111302 $1,450 Ex Heritage Auctions 8/2/2008:7101-Liberty Rare Coins 4/17/2010-The J. Torres Collection of Half Cents
LOT 62 1806 C-4 R1 Repunched Large 6, MS63 Brown PCGS, CAC Approved. Frosty steel brown and light olive with slightly faded mint red in protected areas on both sides. The surfaces are lustrous and this half cent has excellent eye appeal. The best identifying marks, and they are trivial, are a small pinscratch in the field left of the main curl and a tiny puff of steel blue toning nestled between the top of the 1 and the hair above. MDS, Manley state 1.0 late. The repunching on the 6 is clear but not as strong as on the previous example. The reverse is rotated 35 degrees clockwise. Softly struck at the bust tip and on the opposing leaves at the top of the wreath which is typical for the variety. Our grade is MS62. Possibly from the Chapman Hoard of mint state examples that was acquired and dispersed circa 1908. 1099.63/37990345 $4,850 Ex McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 7/2005:1101-Barry Lame (The Green Tree Collection), McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 2/18/2018:101 (as PCGS graded MS62RB, CAC)-Liberty Rare Coins 8/12/2020-The J. LOT 63 1807 C-1 R1 Repunched 7, AU53 PCGS. Frosty steel brown with lighter reddish brown in protected areas. An attractive piece with light wear on the devices and trivial marks. A small vertical nick in the middle of the neck, a diagonal one on the forehead, and tiny low spots (as struck) at the D in UNITED and first T in STATES are the only notable marks. EDS, Manley state 1.0, Fuhrman state 1, with complete dentils around the obverse and no rust lump on the lower left edge of the 0 in the date. The E in CENT and bow below are softly struck, as always on early die state examples. This is the plate coin for the early die state in the Roger S. Cohen, Jr., 1982 reference American Half Cents. Our grade is EF45+ . 1104.53/38206385 $4,500 Ex Chris McCawley 11/25/24 -The J. Torres Collection of Half Cents
