EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 262 1802 S-239 R-3 Elephant Trunk VF20. XF45 sharpness but there is granularity and light corrosion on the reverse surfaces. There is also a minor rim nick at K-9 on the obverse, the only notable mark. Glossy deep steel brown surfaces. M-LDS, Breen state V early. Graded VF 35 net VF20 and TCC#27 by Noyes, his photo 37779. This is the Newcomb’s plate coin for the obverse.

LOT 259 1802 S-236 R-1 XF45. Pleasing medium olive brown with underlying light brown and auburn in some protected areas. There are also a handful of dark steel toning spots on the obverse, free of notable marks otherwise. E-MDS, Breen state II. Graded VF35 net VF30 and TCC#24 in the Noyes census, his photo #25940. Choice surfaces, comes with a nice provenance.

LOT 263 1802 S-239 R-3 Elephant Trunk VF20. 10 points sharper but there is micro-granularity scattered lightly across the surfaces of either side, more so on the reverse. Uniform dark olive brown surfaces free of notable marks. LDS Breen state V, Strong clash marks are visible on the lower reverse, with the identifying “Elephant trunk” die break on the obverse.

LOT 260 1802 S-236 R-1 VG10. F15 sharpness but there are notable rim dents on both sides, most notably under the date, and behind the lower hair curls. There are also traces of verdigris around OF AM. Otherwise glossy chocolate and steel brown surfaces. V-LDS, Breen state IX, with the strong cud over STA and die breaks at STATES, after OF, and down through the wreath to RI in AMERICA.

LOT 264 1802 S-239 R-3 Elephant Trunk F15+. VF25 sharpness but there is light corrosion on the central to upper reverse, and just a touch around 02. Glossy chocolate, chestnut, and ruddy brown surfaces. A couple trivial marks, nothing noteworthy. LDS, Breen state V.

LOT 261 1802 S-239 R-3 Elephant Trunk VF35. 10 points sharper but recolored and now medium brown with iridescent bluish steel tones and peeps of lighter brown in some protected areas. Wispy pin scratches on the cheek and right obverse field are the only notable marks. LDS, Bren state V, with the distinct “elephant trunk” die breaks on the obverse, and a lighter die crack and clash marks on the reverse. Graded XF45 net VF30 and TCC#15 by Noyes, his photo #37789.
