EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 180 1798 S-167 R-1 G5+. VG8 but there are light scratches on the portrait and a few tiny rim nicks over LIB in LIBERTY and ES in STATES. Otherwise free of notable marks. Dark brown and medium steel. M-LDS, Breen state V early with a retained cud over (S)T. Other than B in LIBERTY and OF which are worn smooth, the legends and date are clear.

LOT 177 1798 S-165 R-4 F12+. A few points sharper but there is a rim bruise over R in LIBERTY and scattered marks on both sides. Most are trivial but numerous, a nick under the first A in AMERICA the only worth noting. Mostly steel brown with hints of both underlying lighter brown and deeper steel in some protected areas. MDS, Breen state II. Graded F12 net VG10 and TCC#19 in the Noyes census, his photo #36709.

LOT 178 1798 S-166 R-1 VF30. Near XF sharpness but there are two digs along the dentils behind the lower hair curls and a small horizontal scratch under O in ONE. Glossy dark brown and steel, with hints of lighter brown along the lower left obverse. MDS, Breen state V, with the strong reverse die break obscuring have of E in UNITED and reverse rim breaks at ST. Glossy, smooth surfaces.

LOT 181 1798 S-170 R-3 VF20. VF35+ but there is a horizontal hairline scratch on the central reverse, a lamination stop LI in LIBERTY, and several rim bumps on both sides, most notably under 78. Glossy dark chocolate brown with hints of underlying light brown. E-MDS, Breen state II. Smooth surfaces.

LOT 179 1798 S-166 R-1 VF20. VF25+ but there are several rim bumps and bruises on both sides. The most notable are before the throat, over LI, and over M and C in AMERICA. Mostly steel brown surfaces with hints of underlying lighter brown. MDS, Breen state IV. Smooth surfaces.

LOT 182 1798 S-171 R-4 F12. VF20 sharpness but there is fine porosity on the surfaces as well as a crack on the planchet edge at K-11 that extends through to the other side. Dark olive brown semi-glossy surfaces. Rare E-MDS, Breen state II.
