EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

 THE HELFENSTEIN-NAFTZGER N-7

LOT 59 1818 N-7 R1 MS62 . Lustrous medium steel brown with 10-15% of the mint red remaining. Sharply struck with excellent eye appeal. Just a few trivial marks from choice including a small splash of darker toning at the bottom of the first 8 and a very light scuff in the field off the chin. The best identifying mark is an incipient planchet clip that barely affects the dentils at star 4 and the opposing dentils at the E in UNITED (as struck). EDS+, die state b, with sharp dentils and smooth fields. The always-present die crack connecting stars 6 & 7 is quite light. A very nice cent that comes with a very nice provenance.

LOT 60 1818 N-7 R1 AU50 . Sharpness close to mint state but there are some light contact marks on the cheek including a light scratch. A diagonal nick in the field before the nose may help identify this cent. Glossy chocolate brown. Possibly lightly cleaned and retoned long ago. Sharply struck EDS+, die state b. The dentils are sharp and the fields are very slightly reflective. Graded AU50 by Del Bland. Comes with a nice provenance. Ex F. C. C.
