TNA HOF Collection Pt 1
EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
THE BROWN-HOLMES N-12
LOT 1285 1849 N-12 R2 PCGS graded MS64 Brown, CAC Approved. Choice lustrous steel brown and light olive with faint peeps of underlying faded mint red on the obverse. Satiny mint frost covers this cent and the eye appeal is outstanding. The only notable marks are a barely visible scuff on the throat at the jawline and a speck of carbon under the second T in STATES. M-LDS, die state b. The fine early die lines over UN are gone and the fields are lightly flowlined. Two tiny tabs of extra planchet metal, possibly minor rim cud breaks, show on the outer edge of the rim at the top of the obverse (difficult but not impossible to see in the holder). Very curious. Our grade is MS60+, tied for CC#5 in the Grellman census. Has the eye appeal of a significantly higher grade. The attribution and Iskra Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 405664.64/81014436 Ex Douglas F. Bird-Gary M. Ruttenberg, McCawley & Grellman Auctions 8/19/1995:524-R. STARR-NAFTZGER N-14
LOT 1286 1849 N-14 R3- Repunched 4 MS60+. Lustrous light greenish olive. Sharply struck and nearly flawless, but the luster is a bit subdued. A tiny rim nick over the C in AMERICA is the only notable mark. LDS, die state c, with fine die lines covering the field around the date. The earlier repunching inside the triangle of the 4 is gone. Comes with a very nice provenance.
Ex Floyd T. Starr, Stack’s 6/13/1984:614-Jack H. Robinson, Superior 1/29/1989:1492-R. E. “Ted” Naftzger, Jr. (via William C. Noyes)-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection (includes the Naftzger collection envelope)
