TNA HOF Collection Pt 1

EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 1258 1848 N-41 R1 PCGS graded MS65 Brown, CAC Approved. Very attractive lustrous light olive and bluish steel brown with generous traces of mint red remaining, especially on the reverse. Looks absolutely choice but a glass reveals some microscopic contact marks including a faint but fresh tick on the ear, a couple nicks on the rim over star 6, and a small spot of very fine carbon inside the bottom of the E in CENT. EDS, die state a, before crumbling in the left notch of the second 8. A nice example of a scarce die state. Our grade is MS62+, CC#11 for the variety in the Grellman census but second finest of the early die state. 1883.65/34112224

Ex lot 476 in an unrecorded Stack’s Bowers auction-Jay Knipe, Heritage Auctions 1/7/2018:7173-Mike Iatesta-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 1259 1848 N-41 R1 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown. Lustrous mint red fading to light olive and steel brown. Nearly a third of the original red remains on the obverse and 80% of the bright original red shows on the reverse. The toning in the field behind the head is a couple shades darker than the other toning on the obverse. The surfaces are satiny and nearly flawless. There are two inconspicuous small spots left of star 1, one more right of star 13, and another below the 4. The reverse is pristine. E-MDS, die state b, with crumbling in the left notch of the second 8. A very nice cent. Our grade is MS64, tied for CC#2 behind a marginally finer example in the Grellman census. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. 406548.64/16210021
