TNA HOF Collection Pt 1

SECOND FINEST N-42 RARITY

LOT 1260 1848 N-42 R5+ PCGS graded AU58+. Glossy light brown and olive with delicate overtones of bluish steel. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. The only marks are a small spot of darker olive toning left of star 1 and a tiny vertical nick on the chin. EDS, die state a early (there is no state b for this variety; the die marriage didn’t last long). The fields are slightly reflective and show many fine die polishing lines. A choice cent with light friction on the highpoints. Our grade is AU50, second finest behind an off-center strike of this rare die variety in the Grellman census. The attribution and Iskra Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. (The back of the holder is scratched.) 406550.58+/81014429 Ex Del Bland prior to 6/1989-R. S. “Robbie” Brown, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 6/2/2002:656-Daniel W. Borcherdt Collection (includes the last lot ticket)

LOT 1261 1849 N-1/15 R4 EF40+. Ten points sharper but there are small contact marks at ONE CENT and a speck of greenish verdigris under the N in CENT. The obverse is choice and the overall eye appeal of this cent is quite nice in spite of the imperfections. Frosty medium brown and light chocolate. Sharply struck EDS die state a, without the bar through the O in OF. This is N-1.

LOT 1263 1849 N-2 R2 EF45+. Frosty medium brown and light chocolate. Sharp with very little wear but there is some loose dirt in protected areas. Deserves a bath to expose the underlying mint frost. A barely visible bruise on the edge at star 13 is the best identifying mark. E-MDS, die state k, with minor crumbling on the reverse. Might deserve a slightly higher grade after than bath.

LOT 1264 1849 N-2 R2 EF45+. Frosty medium brown. Smooth with light wear and no notable marks. Quite nice for the grade. M-LDS, die state r late, with extensive crumbling on the reverse.

LOT 1262 1849 N-1/15 R4 EF40. Sharpness very close to mint state, and the eye appeal of this cent is really nice, but a glass reveals this cent was whizzed and superbly retoned glossy medium brown and light chocolate. A barely visible rim nick off the end of the wreath stem is the best identifying mark. MDS, die state c, with a bar through the center of the O in OF (Newcomb’s #15).
