EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

EXTREMELY RARE TERMINAL N-27

LOT 1236 1848 N-27 R2 F15. Sharpness near VF35 with small patches of light corrosion and verdigris in the field before the portrait and stronger corrosion on the reverse, mostly at UNITE and the wreath below. There are some light contact marks including a few short hairline scratches in the obverse fields and a dull vertical nick under the earlobe. Mostly glossy dark chocolate and olive brown with medium brown highpoints. Extremely rare TDS, die state h, with a bold rim cud break at star 12. Tied for CC#2 of only 6 known with this rim cud, and the finest is a recolored VF20. This is the discovery coin for the die state. An important piece for the die state specialist.

THE NAFTZGER N-28

LOT 1237 1848 N-28 R1 PCGS graded MS65 Brown. Lustrous light olive brown and steel with 15-20% of the mint red showing. This cent has excellent eye appeal with satiny surfaces and trivial marks. The best identifying marks are a very faint splash of reddish brown toning in the field right of star 3 and a thin diagonal nick between star 4 and the nose. E-MDS, die state a late or b early. The fields are starting to show microscopic radial flowlines that create attractive cartwheel luster and the die lines between ON in ONE and EN in CENT are clear. The line connecting the S to the adjacent O also is clear and rather sharp (usually seen dull and only in die state b). Our grade is MS62+, very close to MS63, and CC#6 in the Grellman census.
