CONDITION CENSUS N-24

LOT 1230 1848 N-24 R4+ PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Lustrous steel brown with traces of faded mint color on both sides. The only defect is a spot of shallow carbon in the field close to the throat. LDS, die state c. The die line from the top of the O in ONE is gone. The strike is typical for the late die state with weakness on the stars, along the top of the head, and at the truncation above the 48. Our grade is MS60, tied for CC#3 in the Grellman census. An important cent, one of only 4 mint state pieces known of this tough variety. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. 406500.64/16210013

LOT 1232 1848 N-25 R4 AU55. Frosty light brown. Sharply struck and looks mint state but there is a hint of friction on the highest points of the devices. The only mark is a light scratch from EN in CENT to the end of the wreath stem. M-LDS, die state c, with extensive crumbling on both sides. The right foot of the M in AMERICA is connected to the wreath by crumbling, but the connection is not strong. A nice example of this tough variety, CC#7 in the Grellman census. And it comes with a very nice provenance. 

LOT 1231 1848 N-25 R4 VF30+. Sharpness near EF40 but there are too many small nicks on the obverse for the sharpness grade. Glossy chocolate brown with lighter brown in protected areas. A nick just left of the earlobe can help identify this cent. Rare MDS, die state b. The top of the 1 is crumbled to the bust but the M in AMERICA is still separated from the wreath.
