EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

CHOICE 1848 N-3

LOT 1195 1848 N-3 R2 Repunched Date MS63. Lustrous steel and light olive brown faded down from mint color, and at least 20% of the red remains, mostly on the reverse. The surfaces are satiny and this cent has great eye appeal. The notable marks are a tiny horizontal tick on the cheek right of the nostril and a spot of fine carbon on the left pendant of the T in CENT. Nicely struck MDS, die state b. Repunching is clear on all 4 digits of the date, strongest on the 4 & 8. Tied for CC#3 in the Grellman census. Removed from a PCGS holder graded MS64BN (PCGS label #406444.64/16209975 included, and it shows the attribution).

Smooth but there are some tiny contact marks on the obverse, none notable. LDS, die state c. All the early die lines are gone but repunching is still visible on all 4 digits of the date, clearest on the 48.

FINEST 1848 N-4

LOT 1197 1848 N-4 R4 Repunched Date PCGS graded MS63 Red & Brown. Frosty mint red fading to steel brown with 15% of the obverse and at least 35% of the reverse showing mint color. The red on the obverse is faded a bit but the red on the reverse is bright. Choice except for a few small spots including a speck off the end of the nose and a larger spot at the left base of the E in ONE. M-LDS, die state b late. The repunching inside the triangle of the 4 is gone but some is still visible inside the lower loops of the 8’s. Our grade is MS62+, close to MS63. Finest known of the variety in the Grellman census. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. 406448.63/08280657
