TNA HOF Collection Pt 1

THE DUPONT-PITTMAN 1847 N-42 PROOF

LOT 1191 1847 N-42 R6+ PCGS graded Proof-63 Brown, CAC Approved. Very attractive light olive and steel brown with overtones of light bluish steel. Mint red covers about 15-20% of the planchet, mostly on the obverse. Sharp with great eye appeal but there are a few marks. Some microscopic specks of slightly darker steel brown toning are visible under magnification, mostly on the cheek and neck. The notable contact marks are a thin horizontal scratch on the rim at star 12, a light vertical scratch on the rim over star 6, a horizontal scratch over star 8, a light scratch left of star 11, and a diagonal nick in the hair right of the ear lobe. Sharply struck and none of the marks catches your eye. The reverse is choice. Our grade is Proof-60, but the eye appeal suggests a higher grade. The attribution and Matthews Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 397614.63/38342888

LOT 1192 1848 N-1 R1 Repunched 184 AU55. Frosty chocolate and steel brown with traces of very faded red in protected areas, mostly on the reverse. Very close to mint state and the eye appeal is excellent, but there is a very light rim bruise under the end of the wreath ribbon. Otherwise sharp and choice. M-LDS, die state c. The repunching on the 18 is gone but it is still clear inside the triangle of the 4.

LOT 1194 1848 N-2 R1+ Repunched 18 MS60. Very attractive uniform frosty medium steel brown. The surfaces are satiny and this cent is virtually flawless except for a small nick hidden in the hair right of the earlobe. LDS, die state d, with die cracks on the reverse. The repunching on the 18 is clear. Very nice for the grade.

LOT 1193 1848 N-2 R1+ Repunched 18 EF40+. Glossy medium brown and chocolate with hints of reddish brown toning in protected areas on the reverse. Sharply struck with minor contact marks, close to EF45. Rare EDS, die state a, without crumbling in the notch on the left side of the second 8 (Reiver’s old #45). The fields are smooth and slightly reflective and all the fine die finishing lines are sharp. The repunching on the 18 is bold.
