TNA HOF Collection Pt 1

EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

RED & BROWN N-38 LATE STATE

LOT 1187 1847 N-38/16 R1 MS60+. Lustrous mint red fading to light olive brown and steel with 15% of the obverse and 40% of the reverse showing bright original mint red. Sharply struck with nice eye appeal. Would rate a slightly higher grade except for a few spots of slightly darker toning on the obverse, and these have been very lightly abraded. The abrasions are nearly invisible, even with a strong glass, and most are located right of star 2. The reverse is choice. LDS, die state d, with dull die clashmarks on both sides and a fine die crack at S-O. (This is Newcomb’s #16.)

LOT 1188 1847 N-39 R3- AU58+. Very attractive frosty light to medium brown with golden tan in protected areas and generous traces of mellowed mint red on the reverse. Essentially a mint state cent but there are a few small marks including a couple ticks on the edge under 47 and a spot of very fine carbon between star 3 and the dentils. Sharply struck EDS, die state a, with fine die lines from ST through the O in ONE.

LOT 1190 1847 N-41 R4- EF45. Choice glossy light olive brown. Smooth and nearly flawless with light wear on the devices. The fields are hard and slightly reflective and this cent has superior eye appeal for the grade. MDS, die state b. The early die line connecting the bases of the U & N is gone but the fine die line from the right top of the E in AMERICA to the dentils is clear. Comes with a nice provenance.

Ex Henry C. Hines-Willard C. Blaisdell 9/1976 (via Del Bland)-R. E. “Ted” Naftzger, Jr. (via William C. Noyes)-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection (includes the Hines/Blaisdell and Naftzger collection envelopes)

LOT 1189 1847 N-39 R3- AU50. Close to mint state but there are small contact marks scattered over the obverse, mostly on the cheek and neck. The best identifying mark is a light diagonal scratch over the right side of the N in ONE. Frosty tan and light olive with generous traces of mint red showing on both sides. M-LDS, die state b. The fine die lines down through the O in ONE are gone and the fields are lightly flowlined.
