TNA HOF Collection Pt 1

EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

THIRD FINEST N-34 EX NAFTZGER

LOT 1181 1847 N-34 R5 AU55. Sharpness close to mint state but lightly cleaned long ago, now nicely retoned frosty light to medium brown blending to light chocolate. There are attractive bluish steel overtones in protected areas of the reverse and traces of very faded red on both sides. No spots or stains. The toning looks original and this cent has very nice eye appeal. The only marks are a couple thin, light nicks right of star 7, a small area of very fine roughness between the hair bun and star 10, a shallow planchet cutter impression on the outside edge of the rim at star 13 (as struck), and a very tiny rim nick over the second T in STATES. LDS, die state d, with a fine die crack through the tops of TE in STATES. There is sharp doubling from die bounce at ES-OF-AMERICA, with additional doubling at other places on the reverse. CC#3 for this tough die variety and the next finest grades only VF35+ in the Grellman census. An impressive cent that comes with an important provenance.

Ex Sam M. Koeppel 1938-R. E. “Ted” Naftzger, Jr. (via William C. Noyes) 3/10/2004-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection (includes the Naftzger collection envelope)

SECOND FINEST N-35

LOT 1182 1847 N-35 R3+ MS63. Lustrous bluish steel and olive brown with 30% of the mint red remaining, mostly on the reverse. No spots or contact marks, but there are some tiny planchet flakes at the dentils right of star 11, as struck. The hair over the ear is not quite fully struck, as usual on this variety. The remainder of the devices are sharp. E-MDS, die state b early. Lightly cracked through the tops of UNITED and ST but there is no crack through the bottom of the date. CC#2 in the Grellman census behind a slightly finer example. Removed from a PCGS holder graded MS64RB (PCGS label #1878.64/6472782 included). A very nice cent that comes with an equally impressive provenance. Ex Dr. Robert J. Shalowitz 4/1992-Wesley A. Rasmussen, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 2/8/1998:178-R.
