TNA HOF Collection Pt 1

LOT 1157 1847 N-19 R1 Repunched 84 AU58. Glossy steel brown with mellowed red in the fields and protected areas, at least 20% of the planchet showing underlying mint color. Looks choice mint state but there is a hint of rub on the ear and a diagonal nick left of the earlobe plus a few microscopic marks elsewhere on the obverse. E-MDS, die state a. Repunching is visible on both the 8 and 4, and fine die lines connect the N’s in ONE CENT. An attractive cent that comes with a nice provenance.

LOT 1159 1847 N-21/40 R1 MS60. Lustrous light olive and steel brown with mellowed mint color in protected areas on the reverse. Sharp and satiny with great eye appeal. A small nick on the coronet over the I in LIBERTY and a tiny scuff left of star 11 are the only notable marks. EDS, die state a. All the fine die lines are clear on both sides. (This is Newcomb’s #21.)

LOT 1160 1847 N-21/40 R1 AU55. Frosty light to medium brown. Satiny and very attractive with a hint of friction on the devices. No spots or stains, just a few small ticks on the jaw. LDS, die state b, with a die crack at ME to the dentils over the adjacent letters (Newcomb’s old #40). The earlier die lines on both sides are gone and the fields are flowlined.

LOT 1158 1847 N-20 R3 MS60+. Lustrous light olive with subtle overtones of light bluish steel on satiny surfaces. Mint color covers 10-15% of the planchet and this cent has great eye appeal. Just a couple marks including a dull nick or pre-striking planchet chip on the jawline and a speck of carbon over the O in ONE. MDS with very fine flowlines in the fields and sharp die lines on the reverse.

FINEST LATE STATE N-22

LOT 1161 1847 N-22 R3+ MS60. Lustrous medium brown and light chocolate with peeps of faded mint color remaining on the reverse. Frosty flowline luster covers the fields and the eye appeal of this piece is excellent. No spots or stains, just a few trivial contact marks. These include a tiny horizontal tick on the cheek above the throat and a couple light scuff marks near the dentils at stars 12 & 13. LDS, die state f. The obverse die cracks are well advanced and the section between the cracks left of the date is starting to rise as a retained cud (this is clearest where the two cracks cross the rim between the date and star 1). Tied for CC#8 overall for the variety but finest known of die state f in the Grellman census. Removed from a PCGS holder graded MS65BN (PCGS label #37319.65/18900167 included, and it shows the attribution and Naftzger Collection provenance). A great cent and it comes with a very nice provenance.
