EXTREMELY RARE DIE STATE

LOT 1139 1847 N-3/33 R3 Repunched Date EF45+. Choice glossy light to medium brown with mint frost in protected areas. A beautiful cent with light wear on the highpoints and hints of faded mint color in a few protected places. The only mark is a spot of lighter steel brown toning over the N in ONE. Extremely rare M-LDS, die state d/e #2, with a small rim cud over the right side of the R in AMERICA in addition to the earlier rim cuds at ST and S-O. Only three examples are known in this intermediate die state, and this piece is tied for the finest of that small group. All 3 rim cuds are clearly defined. This is Newcomb’s #33 (but this intermediate die state was not mentioned in his reference). An important piece for the die state specialist.

RARE VEDS NEWCOMB-4

LOT 1140 1847 N-4 R3 Repunched 18 MS63. Lustrous light bluish steel brown with 5-10% of the mint red remaining. Satiny and flawless except for a shallow carbon spot on the cheek. Very sharply struck from the earliest state of the dies. The Breen-46 “proof” from this die pair has reflective fields; the fields on this piece are satiny (see page 84 in the 1977 reference Walter Breen’s Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins 1722-1977). But all the fine die lines and details in the devices are as sharp as they come, the reverse is uncracked, and the repunching on the 18 is bold. An impressive cent in spite of the spot. Tied for CC#3 of the variety in the Grellman census.

LOT 1141 1847 N-4 R3 Repunched 18 EF45. Beautiful glossy medium brown and light chocolate with mint frost in the fields and protected areas. Lightly worn with great eye appeal for the grade. Smooth with minor marks including a small rim nick at star 3 and a couple ticks in the field under the hair bun. MDS, die state c late, with die cracks on the reverse; the crack at MER is strong.
