TNA HOF Collection Pt 1

SECOND FINEST 1846 N-26

LOT 1135 1846 N-26 R5 Tall Date, Repunched 1 VF35. Glossy light brown with medium brown toning on the highpoints. There are four small spots of reddish toning on the obverse, and each spot contains one or two microscopic specks of verdigris. Otherwise this cent is choice with very light wear on the devices. The reverse is sharper, close to EF45 and absolutely choice, but the center of the obverse is bulged outward ever so slightly, as always in this die marriage. As a result the hair at the ear wears quickly making grading a bit more challenging. MDS, die state b, with crumbling inside the N in UNITED. CC#2 in the Grellman census for the variety.

LOT 1136 1847 N-1 R2 Repunched Date AU50. Glossy light olive and steel brown. Smooth and quite attractive with very light friction on the highpoints. A shallow low spot (caused by lubricant on the die) is located high on the neck near the hair. The fields on the reverse are slightly reflective from a fresh die lapping. M-LDS, die state c, with die cracks on the reverse. Repunching is visible at the bottom left of all 4 digits of the date.

LOT 1137 1847/47 N-2 R3 “Large 7 over Small 7” VF30. Five points sharper but there is a spot of crud at the top of the O in ONE and some minor contact marks scattered over the obverse. Otherwise nice with smooth surfaces and attractive glossy light chocolate brown toning. EDS but not quite the earliest, die state a late. The lines from the dentils at star 13 are visible but not sharp. Repunching is visible on the 1 and 47, and the top of the smaller 7 above the normal 7 is strong. A nice example of this popular “Redbook” variety.

LOT 1138 1847 N-3/33 R3 Repunched Date AU55. An uncirculated cent with sharp details and some mint color showing on both sides, but there are a few small remnants of glue on the obverse. Otherwise the only defect is a small spot of fine reddish corrosion on the right side of the D in UNITED. Lustrous light olive with about 5% of the planchet showing mellowed mint color. EDS, die state a. Repunching is visible at the left top on all 4 digits and the reverse is uncracked. This is Newcomb’s #3.
