TNA HOF Collection Pt 1

EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

GRELLMAN PLATE COIN

LOT 1133 1846 N-23 R5 Tall Date, Repunched 1 VF30+. Choice glossy medium brown. A beautiful cent with very light wear, close to VF35. The reverse is close to EF40 (the reverse is always a bit sharper because that side is bulged slightly outward in this die marriage). The only mark is a dull, light rim nick at the N in UNITED. Late die state, state b, with a large, bold rim cud over TES. The repunching across the upright of the 1 is clear. Second finest of only three known with the cud break and CC#5 overall for this rare variety. This is the plate coin for the die state in the 2001 edition of the Grellman reference on the cents of 1840-1857. A prize for the collector of significant die states.

Ex Bowers & Merena 3/18/1999:1161-J. R. “Bob” Grellman 7/25/2006-Daniel W. Holmes, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 1/30/2011:170 Fred H. Borcherdt Collection (includes the Grellman and Holmes collection envelopes and the Bowers lot ticket)

FINEST 1846 N-25

LOT 1134 1846 N-25 R5 Tall Date, Repunched 1 EF45+. Frosty light to medium steel brown. The surfaces are satiny and the fields are slightly lustrous. A beautiful cent with very light wear on the highpoints and trivial marks. A few light ticks in the field close above the head and a tick on the left side of the O in ONE are the notable defects. LDS, die state c, with crumbling in the dentils under the end of the wreath stem and crumbling that connects the tops of the C & E in CENT. Finest known of this rare variety in the Grellman census.
