THIRD FINEST LATE STATE EX NAFTZGER

LOT 1115 1846 N-12 R1 Tall Date VF25. At least 5 points sharper with smooth surfaces but a few too many nicks for the higher grade. None of the marks is distracting and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. A vertical nick on the cheek and a dull nick on the front edge of the neck are the best identifying marks. LDS, die state i, with clearly defined rim cuds at stars 1-5 and 5-6. Tied for CC#3 of the die state in the Grellman census. Comes with a very nice provenance. LOT 1116 1846 N-12 R1 Tall Date EF40. Five points sharper but nicely retoned frosty reddish brown and steel with slightly lighter brown in protected areas. No marks or other defects, just light wear on the devices. Terminal die state, state j, with strong rim cuds from star 1 to star 5, star 5 to star 6, and star 6 to star 7. The finest of only 7 known of this extremely rare die state in the Grellman census.

LOT 1117 1846 N-13 R3+ Tall Date, Repunched 1 AU58+. Frosty light to medium steel brown with underlying golden tan in protected areas, particularly on the reverse. Satiny luster shows in the protected areas and this cent is essentially void of contact marks. A microscopic planchet flake on the nose in front of the eye and small puff of darker olive brown toning under the left side of the N in CENT are good identifying marks. MDS with crumbling inside the bottom of the R in AMERICA. The horizontal line crossing the center of the 1 is clear (base of a misplaced 1). CC#5 for the variety in the Grellman census.
