TNA HOF Collection Pt 1
EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
LOT 1109 1846 N-10 R5- VF20. Five to ten points sharper but darkly toned with a dusting of fine carbon around some of the stars, a nick on the neck, and a planchet flake under star 4. Rather glossy dark olive and steel brown. LDS, die state b, with a rim cud break from under star 3 to above star 6, and the cud is strong. Ex 1988 EAC Sale lot 384-Richard V. Punchard 11/9/1989-Daniel W. Holmes, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 1/30/2011:142-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection (includes the Punchard/Holmes collection envelope) CHOICE 1846 N-11 MEDIUM DATE
LOT 1110 1846 N-11 R1 Medium Date MS63. Lustrous light olive with 15% of the planchet showing mint red. Satiny and choice with a sharp strike and only a few marks, all but one well hidden. There are two nicks hidden in the hair over the 6 and another that looks like a prestriking planchet chip in the field right of the inner curl. Otherwise essentially flawless and the eye appeal is really nice. LDS, die state b, with most of the early die lines from the dentils below the date now gone. In addition there is a very narrow rim cud below the 46. Tied for CC#3 honors in the Grellman census. A very nice example of this “Redbook” variety.

CHOICE 1846 TALL DATE
LOT 1111 1846 N-12 R1 Tall Date PCGS graded MS64 Brown, CAC Approved. Frosty light greenish olive blending to light olive brown in protected areas. There are a few tiny peeps of mellowed mint red on both sides, mostly on the reverse. Satiny, sharp, and void of marks or other defects. An impressive cent with great eye appeal in spite of a lack of obvious mint color. EDS, die state c (but this is actually the earliest die state--an error in my book). The dash left of the base of the 4 is fine but visible and fine diagonal lines show near the dentils along the bottom of the reverse, clearest at UN. Our grade is MS63., tied for CC#3 in the Grellman census. A really nice example of the Tall Date 1846.
