TNA HOF Collection Pt 1

FINEST LATE STATE 1846 N-2

LOT 1093 1846 N-2 R2 Repunched 1 AU50+. Glossy chocolate brown and steel with frost covering the fields and protected areas. Sharp with minor marks including two very light nicks near the eye. LDS, die state e, with a small rim cud at AM and a larger one over ES. Finest known of the die state in the Grellman census. Comes with a nice provenance.

Ex Henry C. Hines-Willard C. Blaisdell 7/1976 (via Del Bland)-R. E. “Ted” Naftzger, Jr.-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection (includes the Hines, Blaisdell, and Naftzger collection envelopes)

LOT 1094 1846 N-3 R2 Repunched Date AU58. A sharp mint state cent that has great eye appeal, but a close inspection suggests this cent was lightly dipped long ago. The toning is an attractive light to medium steel brown. The surfaces are lustrous and virtually flawless. A tick on the left side of the O in OF can help identify this cent. E-MDS, die state b. The fine die lines over star 13 are gone but the reverse is uncracked.

Ex Herman Halpern, Stack’s 3/16/1988:578-R. E. “Ted” Naftzger, Jr.-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection (includes the Naftzger collection envelope and Stack’s lot ticket)

LOT 1096 1846 N-3 R2 Repunched Date AU55. Sharpness very close to mint state with a dusting of very fine crud in some of the protected areas, mostly around the ear. There is a light scratch across ONE and microscopic abrasions on the rim over AMERICA. Frosty light steel brown with traces of mint red in protected areas of the obverse. Rare LDS, die state f, with strong, clearly defined rim cud breaks over TATES-OF. CC#4 of this rare die state in the Grellman census. The repunching on the 4 remains visible but it no longer shows on the other three digits.

Ex Richard V. Punchard 11/9/1989-Daniel W. Holmes, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 1/30/2011:125-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection (includes the Punchard/Holmes collection envelope)

LOT 1095 1846 N-3 R2 Repunched Date VF35. Sharpness AU50 but lightly whizzed and retoned light to medium brown and light chocolate. Looks great to the unaided eye but the microscopic effects of the whizzing are undeniable (if you know what to look for). Just minor marks, mostly on the chin and jawline. M-LDS, die state e, with strong rim cuds at TES-OF.

Ex M. H. Bolender 4/18/1936 (as A-8)-Fred Clymer-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection
