FINEST 1843 N-5 TYPE OF 1844

LOT 1046 1843 N-5 R1 Type of 1844 MS64+. Lustrous mint red mellowing to steel brown with about 45% of the planchet showing mint color. Satiny and virtually flawless. Sharply struck with full radial lines in all the stars and crisp dentils all the way around both sides. The only marks are some tiny ticks in the field right of the main curl, a nick on the edge under star 10, and a rim nick at the bottom of the reverse. Otherwise an unqualified gem cent. This is the finest example of the variety by a small margin in the Grellman census, marginally finer than the best example in the famous Naftzger collection.

LOT 1047 1843 N-6 R1 Type of 1844, Repunched 18 AU50. Sharpness very close to mint state but there are some small marks and stains. Frosty steel brown and light chocolate mixed with darker olive brown tones on both sides, darkest at ENT in CENT. The surfaces are satiny and the only notable marks are a light scuff on the bottom of the chin and a fine planchet lamination between stars 1 & 2. The lamination has been lightly abraded to minimize it’s appearance. MDS, die state c, with tiny rim cuds at stars 5 & 13. The repunching at the bottom of the 18 is dull but visible.

LOT 1048 1843 N-8 R3 Petite Head, Repunched 184 MS60+. Lustrous light olive and steel brown with 5-10% of the mint red visible on both sides. Satiny and quite attractive. No spots and the only defects are some shallow low spots on the cheek and neck (as struck), and a light scuff on the edge over star 7. Otherwise choice. MDS, die state b. The earlier die line from the inner curl is gone but the repunching on the 184 remains clear, strongest under the 18. There are no rim cuds on the obverse. Removed from a PCGS holder graded MS63 Brown (PCGS label #1844.63/20798324 included).
