EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
RARE EARLY STATE 1797 NC-2
LOT 210 1797 NC-2 R6 G6 . A couple points sharper with very fine roughness covering the fields and protected areas. No verdigris but there are some light rim bruises on both sides, the strongest of these under the 97. Rather glossy chocolate brown delicately mottled with reddish brown, mostly on the obverse. The date and legends are complete and clear. Rare EDS, Breen state I, before the usually seen rim cud at D-ST.
Ex McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 2/5/2006:129-Chris McCawley 12/2007-Roxanne Himmelstein Collection
LOT 212 1798 S-153 R3 Large 8 with Style I Hair F15+ . Sharpness VF30 or slightly better but there are numerous very light scratches on the obverse, mostly in the field at the hair ribbon, plus very fine roughness on much of that side. The reverse is smooth and choice. No verdigris, and the toning is glossy medium brown and chocolate with some small splashes of darker olive on the obverse. M-LDS, Breen state V. The bulge in the field left of the lower curls is clear. A thin but clear double profile shows on the forehead, chin, and neck. The eye appeal of this cent is clearly better than the net grade assigned here.
LOT 211 1798 S-149 R4+ Large 8, Style I Hair G5 . Sharpness VF20 but moderately corroded. No verdigris but the field in front of the portrait has been smoothed. The date and legends are strong. The obverse has been recolored a partly glossy reddish chocolate brown; the reverse is original medium brown and chocolate. EDS, Breen state I, before any trace of swelling at S-OF-A. One of the sharpness examples known of this tough variety.
