EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
NEW DISCOVERY SHELDON-33 “WHEELSPOKE”
LOT 171 1794 S-33 R6 NGC graded VF Details, Scratched. Medium steel brown and chocolate. Lightly cleaned and retoned. The surfaces are smooth, void of roughness, planchet flaws, or verdigris. Just scattered contact marks including a rim nick over ER in LIBERTY, a pair of dull nicks in the hair below ER, a light horizontal scratch from the ear into the hair, and a thin diagonal nick on the neck under the ear lobe. The reverse is really nice with trivial marks inside the wreath and strong details on all but ONE CENT and the inside part of the wreath due to swelling associated with the later die state. We have seen many early cents with far more significant scratches that received a “real” grade from the major grading services. M-LDS, Heck die state 4, Breen state V, with all 6 of the “Wheelspoke” cracks on the reverse, but the crack from the L in LIBERTY to the cap has not formed. A very nice example of this classic rarity in the series of 1794 cents, a variety that is plagued with net graded examples due to significant environmental damage. This one is clearly above average in that department. It has been hidden away for many decades in an old collection; not seen by Bland or Noyes. Our grade is net VG10+. Certificate #6954534-001

LOT 173 1794 S-41 R3 PCGS graded VF30 . Glossy light to medium brown blending to chocolate brown in protected areas. No roughness or verdigris, only small contact marks. A nick low on the neck and a pinprick in the field off the end of the nose are the notable marks. MDS, Breen state V, with two die cracks on the reverse and swelling at CE in CENT. A nice mid-grade example of the variety. Our grade is VF20. Certificate #901374.30/84984463
LOT 172 1794 S-39 R6 Basal State-1 . Significantly sharper but heavily corroded. Apparently lost after a short time in circulation. It was discovered in the 1930’s near the Nathaniel Green Estate in Coventry, Rhode Island. The date and most of the legends are lost in the roughness, but there is enough detail remaining to nail down the S-39 attribution. Brown and chocolate with some raised green verdigris, mostly on the obverse.

LOT 174 1794 S-44 R1 ANACS graded VG8 . Glossy medium brown blending to light chocolate in protected areas. Smooth except for a patch of microscopic roughness at the bottom of the cap. The only notable marks are a minor scratch on the cheek and a few small nicks in the hair. EDS with an uncracked reverse. The date is clear but portions of the legends on the reverse are weak. Our grade is G5+ (with a grade split of 7 obverse and 4 reverse). The attribution is noted on the ANACS label. Certificate #7341072
