EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
LOT 593 1786 Vermont Ryder-10 R4 Bust Left VG10 . Slightly glossy dark olive with lighter olive on the devices. Covered with very fine granularity and there are several planchet voids, strongest at the feet of the seated figure. Examples of this variety with smooth, flawless planchets are virtually unknown. A bit of the date is off the planchet but the remainder is clear and easily readable. The legends are easily readable except for AUC in AUCTORI. Listed on page 56 in the 2023 “Redbook.” Comes with a nice provenance. Weight 120.8 grains.
LOT 596 1787 Vermont Ryder-13 R1 BRITANNIA Reverse VG10 . Ten points sharper but covered with fine roughness, strongest on the reverse. No verdigris, just minor contact marks. Slightly glossy olive brown and chocolate with lighter brown on the highpoints. The details on the obverse are strong but the BRITANNIA reverse is very weak, as always on this variety. Listed on page 56 in the 2023 “Redbook.” Weight 119.1 grains.
Ex Richard Picker, Stack’s 5/1991:242-Bowers & Merena 11/1992:2348
LOT 597 1787 Vermont Ryder-14 R3 Bust Right F12 . Sharper but there is an “X” scratched across the portrait. Reasonably smooth but there is very fine roughness under the glossy toning, strongest at the bottom of the reverse. Olive brown with lighter brown on the devices. Struck slightly off center to the top leaving the bottom of the date off the planchet. The 178 is visible but the final digit is faint at best. Listed on page 57 in the 2023 “Redbook.” Weight 113.6 grains.
LOT 594 1786 Vermont Ryder-11 R4 Bust Left VG10 . Slightly glossy dark chocolate and olive brown with lighter brown on the devices. Reasonably smooth but a glass reveals very fine roughness in the fields and protected areas. Both sides display some of the usual planchet flaws including one at the eye and another at OR in AUCTORI. The date is not readable although a couple digits are partially visible. Listed on page 56 in the 2023 “Redbook.” Weight 114.5 grains.

LOT 598 1788 Vermont Ryder-16 R1 Bust Right VG8 . Sharpness VF20 but covered with fine roughness mixed with small digs and fine scratches. All the marks are old and blended into the olive brown and steel toning. The notable marks are a dig at the bottom of the portrait and a scuff of fine scratches on the chest of the seated figure. The only planchet flaw is a thin lamination at IN in INDE. The date is weak but still readable and the legends are clear. Listed on page 57 in the 2023 “Redbook.” Weight 105.0 grains.
LOT 595 1786 Vermont Ryder-11 R4 Bust Left VG7 . Glossy light brown on the devices, dark olive brown elsewhere. There are a half dozen obvious planchet chips, mostly on the portrait, and minor roughness elsewhere. A deep chip on the nose and an old scratch down from the chin to the V are the best identifying marks. The date is partial and very faint, essentially gone. EDS. Listed on page 56 in the 2023 “Redbook.” Weight 121.8 grains.
