CONDITION CENSUS 1803 C-4
LOT 293 1803 C-4 R4 PCGS graded AU58 . Choice lustrous light steel brown and olive. The surfaces are satiny and there are traces of faded mint red visible on both sides, especially at D-STA and in the wreath below. Looks mint state to the unaided eye but there is a hint of friction on the highpoints of the devices. No spots or stains, just tiny contact marks including a light nick high on the neck, another in the hair below BE, two fine hairline scratches left of the eye, and another under the F in OF. None of these marks catches your eye and this piece has great eye appeal. E-MDS with the usual die clashmarks on the reverse and minor strike weakness on AL in HALF and the leaves above. Struck with the reverse rotated 20 degrees CCW from the normal head-to-foot die orientation. Graded AU50 and tied for CC#1 honors in the Noyes census, his photo #89078. Our grade is AU55 net AU50+. A wonderful example of a variety that is quite difficult to find in grades above VF. The finest 1803 C-4 in the famous Missouri Cabinet was a sharp but cleaned and hairlined piece that brought $8625 (McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 1/26/2014:58). Certification Number 1060.58/25311947
