 KESSLER PLATE COIN

LOT 227 1774 Machin’s Mills Vlack 3-74A, W-7750 R5 G5 . Sharper but there is a deep dent at the top of the head and a couple small digs under the I in NIA. Reasonably smooth with trivial roughness under glossy chocolate brown toning in the fields and light olive on the devices. Not perfect but the date and legends are complete and easily readable. A variety that is quite rare, perhaps tougher than the R5 assessment might imply. Plated in the 1981 Kessler sale catalog (Spangenberger 1981). Weight 115.8 grains.

Ex Alan Kessler, Hank Spangenberger Auction 4/1981:2325-Dorothy Gershenson, 1997 C-4 Sale, McCawley & Grellman Auctions 11/8/1997:85-Daniel Freidus Collection (includes the Freidus collection envelope and C-4 lot ticket)

LOT 230 1776 Machin’s Mills Vlack 6-76A, W-7790, Large Date R4+, PCGS graded VG10 . Glossy medium brown blending to light chocolate in protected areas. Smooth and choice if not for a planchet void at the eye (as struck). The date and legends are strong. Certification Number 945.10/16160824

LOT 228 1774 Machin’s Mills Vlack 5-74A, W-7760 R4+, PCGS graded VF25 . Rather glossy dark olive brown and steel. Lightly worn but there is extremely fine granularity in the fields and protected areas. There are some light, faint hairline scratches on the lower part of the seated figure, but they do not break the toning and are not visible to the unaided eye. (This die combination was listed as Vlack 8-74A at one time; now corrected to Vlack 5-74A.) The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Certification Number 826948.25/41657224

LOT 229 1774 Machin’s Mills Vlack 5-74A, W-7760 R4+ VG8+ . Slightly sharper but covered with uniform extremely fine granularity under rather glossy olive brown toning.
