SUPERB 1788 MILLER 16.2-O EX MILLER-FORD
LOT 220 1788 Connecticut Miller 16.2-O R5 DBL, PCGS graded AU55 . Rather frosty medium brown and light chocolate. Looks smooth to the unaided eye but a glass reveals very fine granularity covering the planchet. No verdigris or notable contact marks, just a light touch of wear on the highest points of the devices. A curved planchet clip at the bottom of the obverse (as struck) can quickly identify this piece. Intermediate die state with clear die clashmarks behind the portrait but no swelling on the obverse. Struck with the obverse misaligned to K-3 while the reverse is centered on the planchet. Not perfect but still one of the finest known of the variety, and it comes with a great provenance. The attribution and Miller-Ryder-Boyd-Ford provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Weight 143.9 grains. Certification Number 687239.55/48453122
Ex Henry C. Miller, Thomas L. Elder 5/29/1920:2063-Hillyer Ryder-F. C. C. Boyd-John J. Ford, Jr., Stack’s 5/10/2005:499-Kevin Vinton (includes the Elder-Miller tag from Ryder and Ford lot ticket)
LOT 222 1788 Connecticut Related Vlack 13-88CT MBR R5-, PCGS graded VF20 . Slightly glossy dark olive brown and steel. Covered with fine roughness but there is no verdigris. The roughness is strongest near the edge before the knees of the seated figure. The notable marks are dull dents at the I in LIB and to the right of the bottom of the shield. The obverse is slightly misaligned to K-3.5 while the reverse is off a similar amount to K-6.5. The lower half of the 1 is off the planchet but the 788 are clear. This Machin’s Mills product is associated with the Connecticut series because it shares the same reverse (Miller Connecticut 1788 reverse D), here in an early die state. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. (The holder is scuffed.). Certification Number 687740.20/43306285
LOT 221 1788 Connecticut Miller 16.3-N R2 DBL, NGC graded VF20 . Glossy tan and light brown on the devices with light chocolate covering the fields and protected areas. Looks perfectly smooth to the unaided eye but a glass reveals microscopic roughness in protected areas. No verdigris and the only notable marks are some faint hairline scratches on the seated figure. This piece has very nice eye appeal. Later die state with strong die clashmarks in the field before the portrait. The date is bold. The reverse is slightly misaligned to the top causing weakness on the top of the seated figure. Certification Number 2637362-021
