EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

 FINEST MILLER 33.40-Z.2

LOT 191 1787 Connecticut Miller 33.40-Z.2 R6 DBL MS62 . Lustrous brown and light chocolate with generous traces of mint red remaining, especially on the obverse. No corrosion, verdigris, or contact marks. Essentially as struck with great eye appeal. The only defects are a chip out of the rim at the shoulder and a diagonal planchet flaw through ET and the globe, both as struck. Darker planchet slag shows in the fissures on the reverse. Otherwise this piece is absolutely choice. Later die state. The cud at the shoulder is bold and the vertical crack down through the seated figure is strong. Struck a bit off center to the top leaving the date off the planchet. This is the undisputed finest example of the variety and it comes with a nice provenance. Removed from a PCGS holder graded MS62BN (Special PCGS label #687356.62/46981752 included, and it shows the attribution and EAC 1975-Sydney F. Martin Collection provenance). Weight 137.9 grains.

Ex the Stepney Hoard-(possibly Ted Craige), 1975 EAC Sale, Pine Tree Auctions 2/15/1975:224-Tom Derbyshire (via Tom Rinaldo) 7/2006-Sydney F. Martin Collection, Stack’s Bowers 11/13/2023:1195-Kevin Vinton- (includes the Pine Tree lot envelope and Martin collection envelope)

LOT 192 1787 Connecticut Miller 33.43-q R5+ DBL VF25 . Rather glossy dark olive brown with lighter steel brown on the highpoints of the reverse. Mostly smooth but there is moderate corrosion behind the head, strongest at NNEC. Minor planchet chips show on both sides, mostly on the seated figure. Struck from a very late state of the dies, the latest seen, with a severely blunted and clashed obverse and strong die cracks at the top of the reverse. The incuse clashmarks before the obverse portrait are bold. The date and legends on the reverse are bold as well. A die state that has to be graded favoring the reverse. One of the finer examples seen. Weight 130.6 grains.

LOT 193 1787 Connecticut Miller 33.43-hh.2 R5+ DBL, PCGS graded VF30 . An ET LIR variety. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate. Weakly struck on the lower left quadrant of the obverse and the opposing upper right quadrant on the reverse, the weakness effectively eliminating details in those areas. Small planchet chips cover the weakly struck areas and there are some small fissures on the cheek and neck as well. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and the only mark is a very tiny bump on the edge at K-11 on the reverse. Late die state, much later than the Ford, Taylor, and Perkins examples, with obvious swelling at the feet of the seated figure. The date is complete and clear. Struck with the reverse rotated 90 degrees CCW. The attribution and Twin Leaf provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Certification Number 687360.30/36650750
