EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
STEIGERWALT-HAYS-RYDER PROVENANCE
LOT 112 1786 Connecticut Miller 5.8-O.2 R5+ MBL, PCGS graded VF30 . Rather glossy olive brown and steel with lighter steel brown on the highpoints. Looks smooth to the unaided eye but a glass reveals fine roughness covering the planchet. Microscopic specks of reddish verdigris show on the obverse and greenish verdigris shows in protected areas on the reverse. No marks or planchet defects. The date is bold and the legends are strong except for the top of NDE which is off the planchet. Late die state with obvious swelling at the top of the reverse. The attribution and Ryder-Boyd-Ford-Sydney F. Martin Collection provenance are noted on the special PCGS label. Certification Number 686361.30/45294606 Ex Charles Steigerwalt 1890-William Wallace Hays-Charles Steigerwalt’s 10/1093 Fixed Price List-Hillyer Ryder-F. C. C. Boyd-John J. LOT 113 1786 Connecticut Miller 5.11-R R5+ MBL F15 . Glossy medium brown and steel blending to olive brown in some protected areas. Smooth with no hint of corrosion or verdigris. The only marks are a very light scratch in the field before the nose and a small planchet chip at the base of the L in LIB (as struck). The left edge of the obverse is softly struck, apparently because the planchet is a bit thinner in that area. Otherwise this piece would rate a slightly higher grade. The bottom of the date is tight to the edge of the planchet but it is bold. The Perkins and Ford examples were sharper but had obvious planchet flaws. Removed from an ANACS holder graded VF20 (ANACS label #7192648 included, and it shows the attribution). Weight 128.1 grains.
LOT 114 1787 Connecticut Miller 1.1-A R3 MBR, Small Head, PCGS graded VF30 . Choice glossy light olive brown. The color and surfaces are superb but there are obvious planchet voids in the central area on both sides thanks to a lack of sufficient planchet metal. The only marks are three tiny incuse squares hidden between the bottom of the globe and the line below. The attribution and Twin Leaf provenance are noted on the PCGS label.
